My wife and I took off to Scranton Friday night in anticipation of seeing two magic shows on Saturday. As it was a 4+ hour drive, we were really hoping that the shows would be worth it. We were not dissapointed. This post will be about the "Haunted" show which takes place in the evening. http://psychictheater.com/ I'll cover the daytime show and museum tour in another post.

The show is held in an old building in Scranton. We were quite pleased to see that the audience was held to a small number to keep the intimate atmosphere. Every audience member got to take part in two or three different demonstrations during the show.

Dick Brooks was the Paramentalist for the show, assisted by Dorothy Dietrich. Lots of great mentalism and PK effects were presented. The show lasted about 3.5 hours and ended with a seance (about 30 minutes). The mentalism effects were great. I've only dabbled in mentalism so I knew how just a few of the effects could have been done. Even so, I was very imipressed with how well each item was presented. There were a few items that totally baffled me too. I don't want to go into details so I don't spoil the show for anyone else who should attend.

Dick and Dorothy were wonderful hosts. Some audience members stayed to talk after the show for a few minutes and Dick and Dorothy kept my wife and myself there for almost an hour after everyone else left.

Well worth the drive.

3.5 hours? Really? How did that work?

They did just about 3 hours of mentalism and PK effects, then took a short intermission before moving on to the 30-ish minute seance.

I think it went really well. I found myself looking at the time about 2.5 hours into it thinking; "man, too bad it's almost over."

I think that's what you meant by your question?

I only meant that I've never seen anybody pace a mentalism show of that length. It's hard for me to imagine how an audience could be engaged nonstop for that length of time -- even without the addition of a 30-minute seance at the tail end.

Guess I'll have to go to Pennsylvania.

Ah, I see.

I'd be tempted to say I was so interested because I am new to mentalism, but then again as far as I know, everyone else in the audience was new to it as well. I didn't see anyone getting bored with it though.

To Neil;
I am replying to your questions because everytime I find you on TheMagicCafe you are in a positiion of trying to help others. This started out to be a short answer and has grown. I will also send you a PM with other info that is not for the general public.

Just to give you a little background on the show. As you may be aware both Dorothy Dietrich and myself, Dick Brooks, have been performers all our lives. For decades we have had the ablility to create our own successful venues besides constant appearances on national TV. First for many years at the legendary Magic Towne House in New York City with the help of many fine entertainers who also participated. In random order included, David Regal, Jeff McBride, Peter Samelson, Blackstone, Jr, Johnny Ace Palmer, Slydini, Meir Yedid, Bill McQueen, Michael Chaut, Rocco, Otto and George, Robert Baxt, Bobby Baxter, Presto Johnson, Eric DeCamps, Frank Garcia and many many other greats that you have heard of, or never heard of. In that period Dorothy and I would allow anyone to perform, if they stayed late enough, and we would offer them constructive suggestions. On nights when we were short of acts Dorothy and I would fill in. For over a decade it became a popular place in New York, with many sold out evenings. In later years "Mostly Magic" and "Monday Night Magic" would become spin offs of us.

In that period I developed a full evening mentalism show followed by Hypnosis. This was easily a three hour or longer event that went well. Hated hypnosis however, and to this day feel it is a put on. (my opinion only) Was very successful with the mentalism, however no matter how strong the disclaimers, people would still come to me and ask, " When did you first discover you had the Gift?", "Do you do private readings?", etc.

So moved away from that, as I had always been able to make a good living as a comedy magician. Started off as a stand up comic having worked such rooms as The Americana Hotel in Puerto Rico for 3 months, headlined Number One Fifth Ave in New York City (Barbara Streisand and Woody Allen also headined there), the Morocco in Montreal, New York's Rainbow Grills, repeatedly at New York's Living Room with Jack Jones, and others, Three Rivers in Detroit, and a series of other top cabarets of that era.

Eventually crack Cocaine and higher rents hit NYC at the same time so we moved to Pennsylvania where we both have relatives. Here in Scranton we opened the Houdini Museum.

The "Haunted, Mind Mysteries and THE Beyond!" does in fact run three and a half to four hours. As Jim said he didn't see anyone getting bored. This is a fact week after week at $35.00 a ticket, though I know it sounds incredible. More info about the show can be found at http://PsychicTheater.com, including press reviews to back it up. So you know, we are against people claiming psychic powers are real. However this is not clear in our promo and most people who come either expect an evening of actual psychic, paranormal and spirit happenings or an evening of mind reading fun, depending on their outlook from the start. The show/demonstrations go from simple/believable happenings and build to more and more highly improbable "experiments". We add in the story of a murder/suicide/electrocution in the building backed up with local press clippings. We have in our collection several oil paintings by well know psychic from Houdini/Dunninger era Nino Pocararo which are woven into the show.

By the very end we totally turn the tables on the audience with some strong and clear disclaimers, after fooling them badly. This is somthing most say would be impossible, but we do it and it works. Many still believe, however.

You may reply to this entry or PM me for more details. I will PM you as well.

Me and my finacee, Aurelia just watched this show this past weekend. It was awesome. If you're in the area (or even if you're not)- it's worth the drive. Also lots of good facts about the museum as well. Definitely come see it.

Thanks Dick and Dorothy for the wonderful hospitality while we were there.

Thanks. People are amazed that Dorothy and I can do an almost 4 hour Haunted Seance Show all year (not just Halloween) that includes mind control, mindreading, extra sensory perception, telekinesis, many forms of mentalism, including blindfold sightless vision, mind control, Q&A, spoon, metal and fork bending, and a dark seance and keep the people spellbound for the entire evening. Just curious, how many people got upset and ran out of the room during the seance you saw, if any? We usually get from 10 to 20% to leave for that part. Maybe not many on the show you saw, because as I recall it was a smaller group when you came, less than 20.

We call it Psychic THEATER!, and with it all we include a disclaimer and tell Houdini and his wife's read on it all. We have a show people love, are amazed by, and yet keep our integrity. That was key in mounting this show. We are now into our third year. Most of our audiences are lay people with few magicians. It is a $35.00 ticket and no one is ever unhappy with the price, and often people stay a half hour longer after to talk.

Thanks

I personally am amazed ANYONE CAN DO ANY show for 3.5 hours since the Greatfull Dead broke up.

That is amazing if you can hold a lay audience that long. Congrats.

I for one don't believe I could.

Just for the record, it was not and is not our intent to do a long show. It was originally visioned as about a 2 hour show. We are looking to shorten it over time. It just grew to this length as we put it together. We are still cutting, adding, etc. We wanted a show that included some kind of interesting story line which adds to the length, but greatly helps to hold their interest. We wanted a seance section, which adds 20 to 30 minutes, between the getting in and out of the routine. We also wanted a strong disclaimer that also adds time as well.

To this day the show is a work in progress, with items being added and dropped as we try to make it all make sense, and flow smoothly. There are at least nine or more numbers we have taken out and put in moth balls since the shows inception, and several that never made it to the performing stage.

This sounds like an excellent show. I love the fact that it runs that long. I know some always claim that you should only do 45 minutes or so at most, but I've never agreed with that. If the show is entertaining then the time does not matter.

I've been in 3 hour movies that felt like they flew by and then went at other times I've seen a 90 minute movie that felt like it would never end.

Great for you guys!!! I hope some day to get out there and see it.

Congratulations on such a successful show.

How things grow and develop.

This excerpt from an article in Scranton's main newspaper this weekend, The Scranton Times, shows how we are becoming part of the paranormal folklore of the city with our "Haunted! Mind Mysteries & THE Beyond" show. It is a long story about the city's haunts and ghosts and we are included right near the beginning of the article. What follows is the main part that mentions us. To those who have seen the show, it will be clear the writers did not attend the show, but are going by the "magick" image and legends we seem are creating throughout North East PA. This is an interesting development, since the premise of the show is aimed in the opposite direction.

"NEPA's 'other world'.....

"......Today, the supernatural and paranormal still intrigue people, and Scranton has some of its own ghostly tales to tell. The Houdini Museum has been the site of a number of modern-day séances, and those in attendance have been frightened by the presence of less-than-friendly spirits. Speculations about murders and suicides, and even of Indian burial grounds on the site, have been offered as possible explanations for the eerie presences felt at these séances..... "

The article follows with the various historical haunted places in the area, and It mentions other national haunted historical sites "such as the battlefields in Gettysburg and locations in Salem, Mass."

Hope to see some of you at Mindvention this year, as we are going as we have other magic business in Vegas and are staying for the convention.
