Hello all,
I just got my package with the "Stolen Cards" effect I purchased from theambitiouscard.com (great service there by the way). Question: I was a bit surprised that most of the cards in the deck have cut-outs and was hoping to get a deck like the one that Lennart Green used on the DVD (e.g. each card in perfect condition -- no cut corners). While this deck will work just fine, it would be way cooler to have a deck without corners cut out. Does anyone know of any way to get such a deck for this effect? Does anyone sell such a thing? Thanks, Kevin |

Dave VanVranken was the first to apply the casino cards to this type of effect and it is sold under the name "Quintuplicate Coincidence" by Scotty York (who helped develop Dave's idea further). It can be found at Denny and Lee's. I believe when QC was first sold it was with all uncut casino cards but I do not know if that is still true (i.e. that they are still uncut cards). Dave is a member here at the Café so maybe he can shed some light on this.
I don't know if Mr. VanVranken is credited in Lennart Green's version but he should be. |

And, (IMHO) QC is a much better effect! The cornering doesn't really matter! (although if you are a perfectionist - you'd notice the orientation when revealing!)

I got my deck from Lennert Green; traded it for a brand of cards we use in Singapore known as "Aladdin", also by the US Playing Card Company.

Help! How do you guys deal with the observant spectator who figures out that the cards "selected" are not the ones they "selected"?
Thanks! |

I believe Mike Norden of Canada markets an effect along these lines.

Sorry this is an old thread. Just wondering what's the difference between his Stolen Cards and Stolen Cards Deluxe?

I don't think any of the cards are cancelled. Cut.

Some of the cards in the Stolen Cards deck had corners that were cut or rounded corners. This is on way casinos cancel used decks. The delux deck has better quality cards.

I have the older version which does not have the Hells Angels card,
which IMO is a nice touch in the patter theme. ...

The Hells Angels card is a Harley Davidson card. I have one with flames.

The original Green "Stolen Cards" deck is comprised of cancelled casino cards, which figure prominently into one of the suggested routines (that you stole the cards from various casinos you'd played in, as per the name of the trick).
The "Deluxe" version doesn't have cancelled casino cards, because none of the cards are casino cards, they're all random playing cards from beer companies, tire companies, etc. They have nothing to do with casinos. For me, it's not "Deluxe" at all, but rather a let down compared to the original casino card based version of Stolen Cards. It's only a personal opinion, but this trick really loses its soul and character if the cards aren't casino cards. If I was to buy this trick today, I'd choose "Quintuplicate Coincidence", an original, and made up of casino cards. Whichever version you choose, this is a very strong effect, with one of the (IMO) strongest super-punchy finishes around. |

I love this effect, but I agree with the original poster. It seems to me that 'cancelled' casino cards do not jive with the claim that the cards were stolen from the tables. I avoid any mention of gambling or casinos in my performances, so long ago I developed an alternate presentation that may appeal to you.
My presentation is based on the idea of collecting cards, rather than stealing them. I start by asking the participant if they collect anything. Matchbooks, comic books, anything like that. Most people do, and they are more than happy to talk about their collections. This also gives you an opportunity to 'read' them a bit. You can infer quite a bit about a middle-aged man who has a comic book collection, as opposed to a young man who collects the corks from fine wine. A person who has a small collection of the finest specimens vs. someone who collects for volume, is another good example. If they don't collect anything, you can flatter them with a line about not being too sentimental or attached to material things. Either way, you can now segue into how you yourself collect playing cards, and though you could not bring the entire collection along, you have found a way to show off your collection by taking a single card from 52 of your favorite decks (implying your collection is even larger). At this point you can start going through the cards and making little comments about where you got them or what they mean to you. Of course since collecting is really just a hobby, and magic is your real art, you couldn't help but devise a little demonstration using your collection, which you now offer to enact for them. When I started I did this with souvenir cards from various tourist locations, with the idea that I bought a new deck every time I travelled, and the 'hit' would always be the city we were in. With the recent surge of 'designer' cards on the market, I've made a new collection. I find that this is fun for the amateur magicians in the audience (there are always a few in an evening), as they enjoy recognizing some of the cards, are impressed with some of the 'rare' cards that I've included, and many of them collect cards themselves. The hit cards are Aces from "my most treasured" Magic Castle decks. The rest of the collection is Jokers, which is nice because they themselves are all different, and because it is more reasonable that I would remove a joker from each deck than an important card. I often have people ask after the show if they can have a closer look at the deck simply because they are intrigued by the artwork. This may not work for your persona, but it works very well for me. If you want to maintain the gambler theme, or just don't want to go to the trouble of putting together your own set, you could say you collected the cards from the souvenir shops at the casinos. That would at least explain the cancelled cards. |

Sorry to dig up an old thread. So that's the diffence between the original Stolen Cards and the Deluxe one.
However, the deluxe one seems to be out of stock everywhere. Can we still buy the Stolen Cards original version?
