I have a nice wand I made out of a dowel I Minwaxed and urethaned, and I have been thinking of cutting a couple of pieces of copper tubing and making ferrules for the ends. You could probably do something like that for a couple of bucks.
Woke up.

Wouldn't copper be too soft as a tip material for what it often needs to do (tap, bang, etc.)? That is probably why you see more brass - it is a harder metal.

I suppose it depends on what you're banging on. I think a softer metal would be ideal for Cups and Balls where you're worried about dinging the cups. The damage wouldn't go away, but it would be less.

It wouldnt be difficult at all to do this. Copper tubing, either the soft kind, straightened over a steel rod or rigid tubing could easily be used for wand tips.
BTW, the copper tips on the wands on my web site are not from "shipwrecks." The HMS Victory was never wrecked. The plating has been damaged over the years by exposure to salt water.

Ahhh thanks for the correction bill. I forgot the copper and wood came from a restoration, not a salvage operation. they are quite stunning. thank you all for your tips (bad pun intended). Ill be heading the the hardware store to check things out.

One thing you can do is to check for copper sheeting. Also, look for some 5% silver solder. This is usually sold under the name "Sta-Brite." It melts easily with a propane torch, even better with air-acetylene. Find a piece of tubing that will fit the stick you want to work with, cut a rough circle of copper, a bit larger than the fitting or tubing you are going to work with, then clean and flux it. Solder the tubing to the piece of copper sheet. After it cools, file away the excess.

Lint, I think what you may be looking for is "The Magicians Wand"
Search it up on google. It is wood, with brass tips. It also unscrews in the middle, so you can take it apart for easy transportation. Very professional, and will last many years. And for only 20 bucks, you can't go wrong! You can get them at http://www.penguinmagic.com you can watch a very exiting video of Oz introducing the wand, and you even get passageway to a "secret forum" where you and "Magicians Wand" owners from all over the world can talk about your wands! Fun stuff! (Does penguin really need a video AND a private forum for a BLOODY MAGIC WAND???) Anyway, I got mine from http://www.browsersden.com they have a choice of black wood with brass tips, black with silver tips, or a dark reddish cherrywood type wood with brass tips. Very nice. I highly recommend them. |

Cory, thank you however I do not really care for Magic Maker's wand (or products). It does look nice, but not really the style I am looking for. Currently I am looking at the Tabman's wands (although they are brass tips as well). Can anyone tell me the significance of the 3rd "okito" brass ring on some of their wands?

My experience with the Penguin/Magic Makers wands has been less than satisfactory. A few years ago, I sold some of the cups and the wands. I became intimately acquainted with the quality control problems. Some of the wands go together very well. But some of them have a definite bend in the middle at the joint.
I've had my hands on almost a dozen of them. Take your favorite Penguin/Magic Makers wand, put it together, and roll it across a flat surface. On about 30% of them, you will hear a pit-pit-pit-pit-pit as they roll. That's the high spot hitting the surface. Todd: I don't know what the Okito ring you are referring to is.

Ok, I was actually thinking about that after I posted. I remember that I heard somewhere that they where from Magic Makers. But I wasn't sure. Oh well, I still love em.

Bill, you posted the same time I posted, I was reffering to Lint's last comment. I actually never heard of this problem. I know that Magic Makers is not usually recommended by magicians, but my wand is fine. Are you guys sure these are the same wands? Or did I just get a good one?

I had Tabman make me a "Los Angeles Street Wand" a stick with bullet shells on the ends. You can make a wand with copper end tips from Home Depot/Lowes, etc. they are used to seal the ends of copper tubing.

The third ring is Tabman's "signature." He visits here on occasion, maybe he'll see this and fill us in on the details.

Hey Dave, what cups are you using in your display picture?

Those are Gary Animal's "Super Animals."
They're now in the hands of a collector. I've downsized to Gary's Babe and Love cups.

I have a Thomas Wayne wand that I never take out of the house. It is outfitted with ebony, ivory, silver, abalone, and is exquisite. Two of these wands exist. Joe Porper makes some wonderful wands as well. Part of the trick lies in doing the very last part of the finishing after screwing the wand together. However, if the wood cracks, the wand is going to bend just a little.

Dave, do you know a website where I can see some of Gary's stuff?
Thanks for the insight Bill. Joe Porper does have some really nice stuff. |
