Hey all,
Well cards are not my specialty...well I don't really have a specialty, I kind of dabble in all the areas, hopefully soon I will kind of find my true area and excel in one aspect, but for now...I do a little bit of all close-up. Whenever I do my hotshot cut, a few things happen...first) when I put the top packet under the bottom packet the top slides around on top and it messes the cut up sometime (not often) but it looks sloppy. Second) I for some reason am unable to have the card "shoot" out...any suggestions? I think the sliding may be from my small hands but I would like some tips on how to fix these and practice techniques. Thanks Adam |

For the shot, make sure that you side the card out just a little more than 90 degrees with your index finger. Then use your 2nd finger and push up and in an arc towards your body. At first, you'll have to use a bit of force to make the card shoot out. As you progress, it will become effortless.

When I am about to put my index finger to pull the card, they start shifing and get messed up? Is my grip wrong or something?

I do the move but not well,& I use the third finger to launch the card & some time's it is still not easy so I use this ruse. just before the launch lick the end of the third finger & hold it up as If to check the wind resistance (still holding the deck) then fire the card. If you have trouble, and have dry hands give it a try It works for me.

Heh I could never do daryl's version of the hot shot cut, until I seen paul Harris's version which is 10000% easier I'd look into it if I were you. Also if things get rally bad, you could perform it charlier style, Tyler Wilson showed me that one when I had questions. And as someone else said make sure it is LESS than 90 degrees or it will barely work , don't apply too much pressure either.and finally only contact the very very bottom corner that is sticking out.
Hope this helped Ryan

To aid extracting the card neatly... try tilting your hand as the two packets become aligned with each as you finish moving the top packet to the bottom. This way you have gravity helping you.

You need to practice the effect in stages.
Stage one, practice the cut, and only the cut. Stage two, practice the finger extraction of the card (with no cut). Stage three, practice the cut, coupled with the finger extraction. Stage four, practice the finger extraction and the flight of the card. |

This move takes a lot of practice. I have it pretty much down. I'm wondering -- what move did Criss Angel do when he shot a card out of the deck? Thanks!!!

Is anyone using the move to do Daryl's Boomeranging Card of Mystery?

Hello,
I wanted to post something to your problems doing the Hotshot cut. Maybe it can help you solve your problem Try not to rush it out,go slowly over the moves, start doing it with less then a full deck of cards. The gravity hint will help you aswell, tillt your wrist a bit when you are the point when you need to get the top pack under the bottom pack.Keep your pinky finger allways at the bottom of the deck which helps you to do not drop the cards. |

Cosmicsecret: thanks for endorsing my tip about using gravity to help. I also totally agree with your point about the role the pinky plays in the cut.
Now it's your tuen to say how wonderful I again. Cheers Neal

Is this harder to perform with used cards? I just started practicing this today,so I'm nowhere near good but I can %50 do the movements, throw not included,I have some practice cards that are used and old but when I tried to shoot a card with a brand new deck,I thought it was kinda easier,it even worked 2-3 times,
anyone can confirm if its easier with new cards? |

I was using a well worn deck and the spring was gone from them, making the move way difficult...Use a newer deck...

I just realised that 'licking the end of the third finger' helps alot, now I started shooting %75 of the cards, different places in the room,no luck with catching yet Time to practice that part now.

Practice shooting the cards at a target - which could be your hand, or a box for easy collection - but don't worry about catching them yet. Just practice over a bed so you don't have to pick up the cards repeatedly. Then, when you're ready, practice catching cards. There's no use "practicing" catching cards when you only get to try to catch one out of every six. |
