"The Vishnu rope mystery" can be found on page 77, thru 80 of the Karl Fulves "Self Working Rope Magic" book. The description, and the drawings in this book are as good as a block diagram for learning this trick, but the Shigeo Takagi version of "the Vishnu rope trick" has turned a dull one man cut and restore routine into real jaw dropping magic.

Does anyone else do this trick?
Do you do it to music?
How many cuts do you make?
How long is your routine?
What music do you use?
What kind of rope do you use?
Do you pull the core out of your rope?

I want to know everything.

It's also in Tarbell Vol. 6, p159. I'm at work just now, so I don't know if the description and/or drawings are any better, but you might want to check it out.

Thank you for the reference, but Mr. Takagi has taught me how to do it his way. I was just kinda wondering who else knows about this gem, and maybe I could pick up some additional pointer.

That be the rub my friend. Mr.Takagi died in 1996, and hid instructional tape is in Japanese, and over duber in English, I have a DVD copy that was lent to me. I have to return it to my godfather as soon as I am sure I have all of Mr. Takagi's secrets. When I get a video camera I'll make a DVD of my performance, but that's all I can promise. Rjenkins we have had many conversations about rope magic, and I will try to take care of you when I can.

Al - thanks, I really look forward to that. While you are at it, perhaps you could record your performance of Full Circle that you obviously love so much!

I am a rope trick nut, and finding unique rope routines is my passion. The Vishnu, fiber optics, full circle, Pavel's walking knot, Acrobatic knot, and Dennis Loomis rope routine plus are the absolute best rope routines I know, I just invented one I call "I think knot" (unless someone else is using that name) and you are on my list of rope trick friends. If you like rubber band magic, which is my other passion go to my web site http://www.juggleral.com and look at the tricks I have up there now.

Ted
I just went over Daryl's expert rope magic made easy his three DVD set, and he does not teach the Vishnu rope trick. I wish he did.

Al,
You forced me to go to the DVD drawer :-o
It's on Daryl's "Expert Rope Magic...Made Easy", vol 3, 'The Great White Rope'.
It's in the Multiple Cut and Restored Rope section along with the Chineses Rope Chain and the Panama Rope Mystery.
Hope that helps.

Ted THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH
I am speechless, I have no defense other than Daryl put all of his other cut, and restore tricks on disc 2, this one was on disc 3. All of my silly excuses aside you have made this whole thread relevent. Daryl does not have the style, or powerful delivery that Mr. Takagi had, but Daryl does a fine job demonstrating this great trick.

Rjenkins
If you have acess to Daryl's "expert rope magic made easy" it can be fould both demonstrated and performed by Daryl.

I don't have it - it's on my wish list though.
I think with most of these cut and restored tricks the methods themselves aren't so hard, but it's how to make them seem magical and fun that I want to learn more - so I'm interested in seeing good performances.

The Vishnu rope trick simply uses a different, and more deceptive handling. The best way to describe the move is, it's good enough to fool a magician.

Al,
Glad to help!
It seems to me that the Vishnu trick is mainly about how the scissors are handled. Finishing it could obviously be done in any number of ways.
How was Mr. Takagi's handling so much different? Was it basically his routining as opposed to the "cut" itself?

He handled the rope differently with his left hand, he swirls the scissors with his right hand, and swoops both hands together in fluid non stop motion, at the perfect angle, while slowly turning his body to the right so all the dirty business was completely shielded. He also handled his scissors like a samurai worrior. Shigeo Takagi was a master of creating a magical effect with simple every day items. It is such a powerful trick that I am doing it to music, with the gotcha smile on my face like Mr. Takagi had.

What rope do you use? The Takagi cut requires a very soft rope.

I'm still struggling with finding the best one for cutting. Most of what I find locally has the core that I need to remove, but that makes for some limp looking rope. After reading some of your advice it sounds like the Daryl rope is worth looking into.

Man that Daryl rope is very expensive for cut, and restore. I recently found some 1/4" cotton core magicians rope, it's not the greatest, but it's a lot better than that 7/32" rope the magic shops sell these days. I order it fron Neal Prete at ntprete@sbcglobal.net and Neal pays me nothing for this advertisement, it's just good stuff.

Magiguy.... All I can say is that Daryl's rope ROCKS. I love it and couldn't recommend it more. I use it for all my rope routines, I do cut and restored with it... but not CUT and restored if you get my drift. Smile
