Hello all. I am a close up magician and have decided to add a mentalism effect to my routine. I need some advice on something very specific. What is the best book(s) to learn the subtelties of pumping for information? In order to perform the effect I need to ascertain two letters from a chosen word in an entry in a book. I have some instructions but I was wondering if there are books that teach the subtelties of pumping for info without people remembering that you did so?
thanks - Andy |

I once read a book called "Messing With Minds" that taught a simple way to get the first letter. I guess two letters would look more cumbersome, though.

This seems like a rather convoluted way to go about it - can you give us a little more information on the effect itself, to see if there are alternate methods?

Yes. Sorry if it sounds unclear but I don't want to expose to much in respect to the creator. Basically it is a book test that allows for many impossible reveals once you determine the letters in a word. The person picks a word in an entry in a book and then you reveal a bunch of information about the entry. The first letter reveals if it is a male or female and then it wittles down to a bunch more information once you get the second letter. Probably not anything new to established mentalists but very new to me.
Hope this is a little more clear. thanks - Andy |

Don't pump. If you cant do it good, it's obvious and directs the suspicion. Be unclear and just ask for it. Since your purposes are different, it'll fly.
In other words, If I want to know the letter YOU have, it's a trick. If I want you to help confirm or clear up the letter I have, it falls within the requrements of a mentalist, and is not suspicious. You can always expand it a bit and just do a CT on the word. Since you are not catching THAT word and feeding it back to them, they will never make the connection between a possible peek of that word and the info you reveal. There would be no connection in their minds.
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.

Tom is right. It takes some experience and practice in order to pump or fish for information without it seeming like you are doing so. Since you are going to be revealing a lot more information than just the word, you have a bit more leeway with asking for clarification with the word.
I use my own booktest that I made myself, thanks to CaféPress. It sounds similar to the one you are using with regards to getting a lot more information once you have the word. With the method for that I built into mine, I make an educated guess on the word, and usually get some of the actual letters right, not the word itself. I write my guess on a pad, and write the actual first word on the pad underneath, pointing out that I got some of the letters right, but that it is hard to receive concrete thoughts from the spectator. Then, I proceed to read the "abstract" information which I know now - the summarization of the next few pages. It's a presentational ploy that fits what I do, and it may or may not work for you. Hope this helps you out a bit. Rick |

Tom, thanks, that seems to make sense. I am probably overthinking it. It sounds like if I am asking them to clarify something that is coming into my mind rather than "pumping" that the request goes by relatively unnoticed. I guess I just need to tryit on some people and see how it flows.
thanks again for the advice - Andy |
