Hi Guys,

My doves have layed an egg. They have done before but have never taken any notice of them. But this time they are sitting on it. Is there anything I should do for them? Like move the cage to more enclosed space or something. They have not made a "nest" or anything she just lasyed it on the bottom of the cage and sat on it? Sorry if I sound a bit green to all this but they have never paid any attention before. Can anybody suggest some good online sources for info on doves and there eggs?

Best wishes,

Luke

Luke, if you can get a nest in the cage, the next time they get off the egg, very carefully put the egg in it and set the adult bird on top of it. There's no guarantee but you can try. They should be laying another in a day or two.

There isn't anything you need to do for them. They have all the correct instincts to care and feed the little ones. Just be sure to keep fresh food and water in the cage and keep them out of a draft.

A good question and answer forum for doves, besides this one is the dove hotline

Our own Bob Sanders used to write this column and then it was taken over by Tony Clark. There's a lot of information there.

Thanks dave for the info.

I will keep all that in mind. I had a look at the egg this morning and I had a crack in it so I took out as it wouldn't have hatched. But I will read up on the dove hotline and try to get a "nest" for next time.

Thanks again dave,

Take care,

Luke

Luke, if you want the babies, put some nesting material in the cage so they don't lay directly on the floor. Depending on the size of the cage, you can put a nest in the Cage. They'll find it when they're ready.

I use a dish from the pet shop called a coop cup. I fill it with nesting material and just leave it there.

I have two nests in my cage and two pair of doves. One nest is a metal strainer, the other is made of basket material. I keep fake eggs in the nests to keep them happy, but I still watch for them to lay other eggs on occasion.

I was late getting the eggs out of the cage this week and I have two babies on the way. When the egg is forming a baby dove I do not have the heart to take it away. So if you live near Bamberg, Germany and want a pair of magic doves, please let me know. I will need to find new magic homes for the beautiful babies.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.
