That black-mesh rubber shelf lining (from Wal-Mart, etc.) cut to size does a good job of holding a close-up mat that doesn't have a rubber bottom.

At a fabric store you can get a backing material that has heat-bonding material on one surface. Bonding this to a flimsy fabric may give it enough body to stay in place. The heat-bonding material is not non-slip, however.
I have already bonded a very nice, but very flimsy, altar cloth this way. It enables me to use in as a table cover.

Beware!
Not all of thes rugs you will see on these dollhouse sites are WOVEN rugs. Many of them are PRINTED onto whatever material they are using. They look nice online, but they are not very attractive when you see them live and in person. The woven rugs, which seem to be hard to find are stunning indeed. Ah this reminds me of my time in Milwaukee as a young girl. I spent a lot of time at the dollhouse store, building with my mother (R.I.P.) a huge Victorian dollhouse. I wish I had know those derned carpets were going to be used in magic (not yet a hobby of mine). Ah well! |

You can also try some older carpet stores. Some of them have actual real mini-oriental carpets for display / sales purposes. Although, if they do, they are usually protective about parting with them. Some will however, I got mine this way. If you can find one, they're very good because they're attractive, durable and plush. (er...like an oriental carpet)
