Ok... I almost got the entire trick appearance into the subject line so as not to waste too many people's time.
I'm trying to recover the name of a simple trick I know in which 4 aces are held in the right hand, then pulled apart and pushed back together again. Snap. One Ace has turned back up. Same again. another ace turns. I'm simpifying the descriptions here so as not to expose too much. In short, all the aces turn back-up one by one. The twist is that when you have magically flipped all the aces backs-up and then turn the pack over, the aces have all changed into something else. It is similar to Twisted Flush in concept but there is no counts in it. It is a very simple trick. It's been driving me crazy. I have started writing down tricks in my personal journal in order to remember them and I'm grouping tricks like this together... Twisting The Aces-type tricks. Things that are related in concept. But I cannot for the life of me find this one. I've been looking for hours. So I guess it isn't on any video or in any book I have. Or is it? What is it called and who has invented or published it? Anyone?

George Sands' 'Super Optical Illusion' in December 1946 issue of "Hugard Magic Monthly" has exactly that effect. Based on the Sands trick, 'Gamble Amble' appeared in 1960s released from Louis Tannens.

Thank you for the information! These sources are definitely not where I have seen it though. They could very well be describing the same trick, but these names for the trick don't seem familiar to me.

Meir Yedid's "Card Marx" works this way too. The key to all of these is that the cards turn face *down* one at a time, thus hiding the real nature of the cards. If there are no "counts" involved, could it be using an Ascanio spread to display "four" cards?

Yes! Now we are on to something! The name "Ascanio Spread" suddenly sounds very familiar to me. That would be the one used, I'm sure.
Card Marx however... not familiar with that name. It is a catchy name though. If someone had mentioned it to me before, I'm sure I would have remembered it.

I am not aware of any effect using the Ascanio Spread where after showing the cards turning over one at a time changing to something else. John Cornelius had a marketed effect called Marked which did something similar, cards would turn over one at a time exposing a blue back. After you were finished all the cards were shown to have red backs ( I think ). Of course there are many effects that are similar..

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of tricks using similar effects and techniques. I'm sure that if someone made a family tree for these relatives it would be quite big. Maybe that is a future book concept for someone. Just tons of variations of one idea or of one type of impact collected together.

I have "Marked" from John's lecture notes. It's one of my favorite packet tricks. No Ascanio spread in that one, just some good handling. Another one of this "family" is "Backflips." (Which I hear is a copy of yet another trick, but I don't recall the name of that one)
Both of these use an extra card and some face down turnover handling to hide condition of the real kicker, which is the backs that changed to a completely different pattern. Actually, if I recall, Backflips has three changes. Card Marx is similar but finishes with an odd color back with the faces of the Marx Brothers on each one.

Yes... I'm starting to realize how much of a shot in the dark this really is with my flimsy description and all the many similar effects out there. This is slowly eating me alive. For a while just now I was almost sure that I had imagined the entire routine in my sleep.
But I'm sure it exists and that it is not from any obscure rare source. I thought maybe I had seen it on YouTube which would usually indicate an easy and well published popular effect. But it isn't among my bookmarked videos. Perhaps it will suddenly come to me. I appreciate all the input you have given me!

Just an epilogue here to say that I did come across it again, quite by chance on YouTube. It is Mercury by David Kong. I'm afraid I have no idea who he is, but it's a neat trick.
The reason why I didn't remember it's name was that my brain simply cannot associate good old fashioned card effects with these hip new power word titles. "Have you seen Xtreem Mortality or Quantum Reaper?" "Er... no, what are they?" "They're like card tricks where one card like changes color from red to black!" Ok... that was my grumpy old guy rant. Nothing wrong with the effect itself. It's very clever. But the easiest way of finding it is to search for old music videos by Queen: Queen... Magic... It's a Kind of Magic... Freddy mercury. Magic.. Mercury... There it is.

Though not exactly the same effect, Revolver from Penguin Magic is similar and is quite easy to do. I was able to deduce the method just from watching the demo video, so I'm sure many others could do likewise. It's a good trick with a nice color-changing backs kicker.

DStachowiak, not this exact video no. But the same trick, except the one I have seen is looking down on your hands like in most regular twisting effects.
I actually think looking down on the cards works better. As he said in the comments to this YouTube video, this version is intended just for camera. By holding cards up like this you are really just narrowing your own angles, I think. But he did it really well. The plastic cards ruin most of the effect since you have to look really hard to recognize what they are supposed to be. The exact video I saw may be long gone. Here is one that is very similar: http://youtube.com/watch?v=opZqC2piwBA (In appearance I mean. The one I saw was a tutorial). I like the ending with the little fan in this one. That was very nicely done. I wonder how often that works securely off camera. So many things require many takes and only looks good on camera. This trick has one weakness and one possible flaw: One, you get a very thick card that people are looking straigt at. A common problem with twisting effects like this and the reason why I'm not sure how well they work in real life. Two, in this last video, this is hidden by moving this card about, which is a bit counter productive since it makes your eyes follow that very card and not the other safe ones.

I actually liked the idea of the plastic cards, but I agree they are not as easy to read as they should be. As I posted somewhere else on the forum, I think they are intrigueing, just not well designed. In fact I think they are butt-ugly. The faces look too much like the backs, I think it was a mistake for USPCC to use the same color scheme for front and back. These cards would be vastly improved, and much easier to read, if they had used traditional colors (red and black pips against a white background) on the faces. The way they look now, if you did a trick like triumph, most spectators wouldn't even notice the reversed cards unless you told them what to look for.

Yes, that's how I feel too. Kind of amazing actually how all cards seem to have one thing wrong with them. Or one thing that isn't the best possible option. Well... people have different taste obviously, but it seems that there is a huge variety in rather impractical cards, like for instance that you can get a zillion different varieties of reverse pastel colors. And then when it comes to cards that are actually usable, just two varying face designs in all the USPC cards.
But that is a different debate I suppose.
