Anyone ever read Paul Gertner's Steel and Silver book? I havn't read it and I haven't seen his DVDs either. I was wondering what a fan would rate the book in general as well as how good the effects are inside. I know his award winning cups and balls is in there and that rocked. Anyone got any say on the book?

It is an interesting book in that it reads rather bland in regards to the effects but if you saw Paul perform them you would realize how strong they are. Unshuffled is great as are some of the other routines. I have not seen the dvds but did see Paul do his show and that is what made me change my mind about it.

So just the tricks don't seem the best as written in the book but really they're more than the book makes them out to be?

It's a great book. Lots of good material.
If you're a dice stacker or do effects with dice you'll love his "triple die-lemma". certainly worth having.

Yes, I actually had a discussion about books that don't read as strong as the effects are and both of us picked Steel and Silver. The material is great, you just have to do it.

I have probibily used more marerial from this book than any other !
One strange thing is you can follow the effects through several stages. Some of the tricks are straightforward while others require a lot of work. It will last you for years. |

It's strange, Steel and Silver is said to be one of the fastest selling magic books ever, but I never see a lot of discussion on it.
It is an enjoyable book, even if only for the FISM/IBM act. |

Paul's book is filled with excellent professional material that he has used to make a living with for many many years. all of the effects have been audience tested countelss times. In other words, this book will not appeal to most of the magicians on the Café'.

Well, that definitely sounds like everyone has a good say on it!!! I think I'll buy it! I'm really interested to see his dice routine. I learned a little die trick years ago from my uncle before I got into magic. This'll be neat to learn!

I think you should be aware that a fair amount of the material is done sitting down.

Mmm...that could create a bit of a problem. Paul Gertner is definitely a sit-down performer. How much is sit down? 75%? more?

Id say 75 % , although some you could do standing I think , but will still need a table

There is a lot of sit down material, but you can change many things to make them standup. Some of his work is out of a case too, which you can sustitute your pockets for. You may have to change around some of the handlings a bit, a little creativity will overcome those minute challenges.

Greetings,
Other than the cups and balls routine I've seen Paul perform all of the effects from the book standing (not seated) at a trade show booth. Between the ages of 12-15 the company my father worked for hired Paul to perform at their trade show and hospitality suite. So basically I was priviledged to watch him perform for 6 hours straight on the trade show floor and then another 4-5 hours later in the evening at the hospitality suite. Every serious close-up worker should have this book. You can do no wrong learning from a seasoned, polished and well-respected professional. Cheers Bill Abbott |

I have to agree that the book reads blandly, but the wealth of quality material is fantastic.
