Hi all, just a quick note to say that the second print run has arrived at Mitox HQ here in sunny Coventry, and I have dispatched any which have been paid for. The book is properly available now, in a more conventional kind of 'you pay for it, and I ship it ASAP' way than before.

If you are interested in Mitox, please take a look at:
http://mitox.phillsmiff.com

Like I said, I have limited stock, so whilst they are here, it's: order now, ships ASAP. Usually the same day. Thanks to everyone who has sent me emails to let me know what you think, or posted up here on the Café, I really appreciate your kind words, and I'm glad you are enjoying Mitox.

Thanks again!

This is excellent and entertainingly written. I agree with Looch that the premise sections are very thought-provoking.

Hello.

The ad states "When you perform mentalism do your audience believe it$B!G(Bs real?"

Is there an earthshaking effect in the book?

Hi Jay Elf, yes, there are some great effects in Mitox (I would say that though), but what the website is referring to is not so much what you do as how you do it. Since you are unsure of the book, I will summarize it for you:

-----------
By developing a character who believes absolutely in their own innovative and unique world you can present a persona capable of imbuing every effect he performs, indeed every moment of his presence, with a conviction and fascination that will draw spectators in and sell them on your performance. (Insert 20 killer effects, musings on new premise ideas and tips for creating new effects, all with a healthy side serving of beards, xylophones, Frankenstein, M&Ms, shopping trolleys, Playboy bunny letters and uncool clothes etc. Trust me it'll make sense.)
-----------

Jay, if you are unsure as to whether you want to buy Mitox or not, PM mindpunisher and get his copy, it'll probably be cheaper than the new copies are.

Doh, for some reason the server hadn't registered the uploads, so the new site didn't go live.

Anyway, the new site is now live, feedback appreciated!

Here's one that isn't Ebay fodder. I'll read this one several times a year, I'll bet, whether or not I do any of the effects inside. It's worth money in your pocket to follow the thoughts and advice he gives. He clearly states what I've been formulating (or trying to) for a long time...very nice. Centering, grounding and inspiring. The book will add a legitimacy to what you are doing, will get you thinking in ways we all need to think.

Very good expenditure. Well done. Thanks!

Hi Tom, glad you have got so much out of Mitox, I have got a great many positive emails from people who have said they are putting the ideas in Mitox to work in their performances. It is fantastic to think that all the hours I put into the book are paying off for people I may never meet, performing for audiences in countries I may never get to visit, even in some small way.

Thanks again!

One reason I’m drawn to mentalism as an art-form is that those who write on it tend to be more prone to contemplation than their wand-wielding brethren. I guess it's inherent in the nature of mentalism, which has at its centre how people's minds work.
You know how, in the increasingly crowded field of literature on mentalism, occasionally you find a real nugget: a melding of well-read thinking, the courage to be a little ‘out there’, and real-world effects? Phill Smith has produced one such, and he is to be congratulated on a fine job.
I’m in the habit of bookmarking items that interest me in a book, and in my now well-thumbed copy I spy 6 bookmarks. Six ideas I want to work with further is a high count in my experience; as far as the rest of the material is concerned, I’d cheerfully say there’s not a dud amongst them.
As an artefact, this is a nicely-produced paperback, whose author has an engaging style that makes this a very good read. He has leavened the effects with thought-provoking essays that display his experience as a worker. This is not beginners’ material: not because it is at all difficult, but required performing experience and an ability to engage with an audience.
Congratulations Phill on a fine job, and thanks for sharing this contemporary material with us.

I will add my two pennies to this thread and congratulate Phil on an excellent piece of work.
Here is what I got from it:
The book is very practical, straight forward, cleanly presented and simple.
My first thought was this is too simple. However, there is an amazing amount of thought provoking material hiding under this deceptive facade. Initially, the simplicity of some of the routines just make you have to get out there and try them out.
By this point you are thinking – “o.k. that’s fun!”
Then a strange idea will creep over you – something quite unusual in our world – the alien thought will occur – ‘I have not wasted my money!’
When you have got over the novelty of this feeling, you will find that somehow Phil has planted a whole range of thought provoking ideas in your head – these seeds start to germinate – ‘My god yes, a one ahead – no swami.....’ ‘Hmm, how did I get these strange powers, what premise is believable to the audience....’
Looking back, I doubt if I will use too many of the routines unaltered, as I they do not suit my style. However, I am left thinking that this is simply one of the best and most direct books I have read in a long time and more than worth the money..... Simply, because there is so much in it that can be used and built upon.......
Congrats Phil, it’s pure gold!

I really like Mitox. Although named after the Zoroastrian demon of lies ( Smile ), in all truth, it's full of great thinking and useful methods. No falsely spoken words here when I say "great work Phill"! Thanks for such a great book!

Mitox is one of my favorite books, one effect in the book, "Red Handed" can be a powerful piece if presented properly. I am anxiously awaiting a Mitox II to come out!

I'm glad this topic bumped up again. I recently received Mitox and I love it. I have to say that the title and subtitle made me think it would be something very different. There's lots of great material in it and I'm looking forward to Mitox II.

Hi, many thanks for the support. Since a couple of people have mentioned it, I just wanted to give some kind of update on the follow up to Mitox, which is to be called Yokai.

The book has been written and illustrated, and is currently being proofed with a small number of people who are helping me to get some perspective on any possible errors and mistakes. I have built a website with some information about the book on it, effects lists, etc, but as it is subject to change pending the information from my proofing team it should be taken with the addendum that changes may still occur.
http://yokai.phillsmiff.com
is the URL. Pre-order is not yet available for the reasons listed above. I will send an email out once it is.
