Anyone have any info on this stunt? Its were the stomake gets sucked up under the rib cage. Very shocking. Cant explain it any better. I imagine it has a lot to do with a strong diamfram. I would love to know more about the work that goes into it.

Melvin Burkhardt.
http://www.backwashzine.com/melvin.html "Ultimately he developed the Anatomical Wonder act, or, as he also called it, 'The Anatomical Blunder.' " The real work on it is known, in medical terms as the "Meuller Maneuver". In simple terms it is "performed by having the patient inhale with the nasal passages occluded and the lips closed " To do the illusion effectively, you should be reasonably thin. I did it as a child and can't do it very effectively any more......too much mac and cheese.

Arnold Schwarzenegger discusses this in his book Encyclopedia Of Bodybuilding. Bodybuilders use this when they pose to create the dramatic V shape the judges want to see (wide shoulders, very narrow waist). It is achieved by isometric exercises focusing on the inner abdominal muscles, and if you are a thin person, then this gives you the dramatic skeleton look when executed.

Jeremy, how do you mean have the lips closed and the nasal passages occluded; doesn't occluded mean closed as well? How would the person inhale? through the closed lips?

I have a friend who can suck his gut all the way in, I mean more than the average person, you can almost seen his spine. He loves to do it to girls, they give great reactions.
I can suck mine i, but nothing special. I can however pop my shoulder blades out, and dislodge my shoulders them selves. |

MagicJared:
It is like inhaling without being able to breathe in though your mouth an nose--you are just creating a vacuume (as in the name of the pose). First let's start with the opposite maneuver. The opposite is called the Valsalva Maneuver. This maneuver is where you take a big breath in and, against a closed airway (mouth and nose) you increase the pressure, by straining down and exhaling against your closed airway (as if you were trying to move your bowels and you are constipated--I CANNOT believe I am writing this...). So the Mueller Maneuver is the OPPOSITE of the Valsava Maneuver. Exhale and then, against a closed airway, try to inhale. You will see that your stomach flattens out. Then, use your abdominal muscles to further the action and throw out your chest by lifting it upward. Best of luck. Don't pop a hemorrhoid, doing the Valsalva!

Gotcha, being skinny, I can do this move relatively well, although I wouldn't want to hold a pose for too long since breathing is always nice. Thanks for the info. and by the way, thanks for immortalizing my feet in your avatar...good times.

I know--isn't that great. I also ave it as the background on the desktop on the computers at work. Once I walked into the ICU and the nurses had changed EVERY computer to that background--it was very amusing.
Skinny folk, like yourself, shouldn't have much of a problem with this maneuver. As I said, I used to do it as a kid. At this point, I guess I haven't seen it done by someone who can work it and present it as "something special". So, for me, it doesn't seem impressive at all. It just looks like what it is--someone sucking in their gut.

Im kinda lucky ive been losing weight over the past few months. From 235-190. Yay me anyhow my rib cage is about (acording to my doc) about 80% deeper than the average mans. So Im very barrel chested and this manuver (the little ive tried to work it) looks fairly unual on my frame. So it may one day find its way into being a warm up for my sword swallowing. Seems like the two may fit.
Thank you to all for the info. Anton |

Oh and another interesting note. I have a bunch of tattoos on my tummy so when I do the move some of them dissapear adding to the illusion. Just a note.

Anton, sounds like you were made to do it. Good luck. tattoos dissapear, eh? I wonder if someone could do a trick like a mad magazine fold in, that'd be great.

HAHAHAHA that's actual realy funny! To bad my tummys already all tatted up. You could also do somthing were you bet some one you can bring "tattoo x" up to meat "tattoo y" then do the move bringing the tattoos very close togehter or somthing. Im not totaly sure how it would work but the fold in is a great idea.
I am actualy still laughing about it right now. Anton |

You don't actually need to be skinny to do the "stomach vacuum". I have done it since I was small and now I am not so small. One piece of advice is to start trying the maneuver with your hands or elbows on your knees. This will put the belly on the slack and make it easier to pull in. Also, you should exhale as much air as possible before trying to inhale and focus on pulling in your belly(like when a hot chick walks by). I hope this helped, and don't stop sucking
