Japanese magic has always fascinated me till this day as I try to learn as many effects possible created by Japanese magicians. The objective of this post is to gather as many Japanese effects possible through different medias in the English language only (books, pamphlets, magazines, DVDs, videos).

To start off...

Books:
1.) Five Times Five Japan
2.) New Magic of Japan
3.) Sawa's Library of Magic
4.) Amazing Miracles of Shigeo Takagi
5.) New York Symposium Volume 5 (including some great effects by Japanese performers)

Magazines:
1.) Apocalypse
2.) Trapdoor Magazine
3.) Genii (most notably 1969, 2000, and 2003)
4.) The Looking Glass

DVD/Video:
1.) Magic of Japan Video
2.) Secret Sessions (Wada, Sakai, and Hirose)
3.) Greater Magic Library - Classic Coin Vol.2 (Atsukawa's coin routine + Sawa's coin sequence)

If anybody knows any additional material, please feel free to add.

Best,

I got my copy of Affections from Ton Onosaka's Magic Land. You might try e-mailing him ( magic@magicland.jp ). I rarely see the Fujiyama notes; I think I just got lucky.

Yes. There are many in the series, but this is the only one that is in both Japanese and English and is limited to 500 copies worldwide.

I have the first volume, and watched the second one. Good material.

I think there are 3 volumes.

Shigeo Futagawa (sp?) has a book on coin magic in English.

Oriental Conjuring and Magic, by Will Ayling and SH Sharpe (Supreme, 1981; 384 pages) contains a whole load of magic that ranges from Indian/Hindu magic to Chinese and Japanese tricks and routines.

The book Scott mentioned above is Shigeo Futagawa's 'Introduction to Coin Magic' (Borden, 1978) - a great little book.

Thanks Richard for the information. By "Japanese," do you mean the theme of the effect is related to Japan or the trick itself is invented by Japanese magician.
