OK - I finally got this sucker - I admit for $10 - but really even for $20 looking at this it is a gem of mentalism/bizarre magick. I can see why people may have freaked because the add claims it is a great impromptu effect - but they assumed that means anytime anywhere - well NO- anyomne doing mentalism and magic already knows impromptu still means often "appears so" and also "right place right time" etc. Next, the book itself and DVD, even if you IGNORE THE EFFECT itself, gives a lot of pointers on presentation ideas, tips a couple of general mentalism effects, etc. Also, the book is readable, well produced, minimal grammar/spell errors - looks good overall. Plus - in the end - the effect DOES WORK... not as something you add in regularly to your effects but an instant miracle when the conditions are right. Plus, you can use an extra GAF. YEAH. Not to mention, if this doesn't inspire you to think up extra ideas on how to do these things... c'mon. I had already dreamed up a ton of spin off ideas before its release - I didn't buy because of all the negative slamming - for which I regret because 1) Harris does good ideas 2) with talk to you about them 3) are not that expensive 4) innovative - well, I'm glad I got it.
Just wanted to put that in here as I think it really got a bad drubbing overall. Maybe I'll start a thread of potential miracle effects for under $20.

I do not agree with your definition of IMPROMPTU.

For me, if the effect is impromptu (appears, or is spur of the moments with no preparation). As for the aspect that needs to be there that is outside your control, which has nothing to do with the term "impromptu." Most effects, impromptu or not require certain conditions or settings, for example, you don’t use the CT in the dark.

Yep Tony - exactly. A lot of mentalism can't be done in pitch darkness - and yet some effects can! Hey DM, are you saying those who do agree with the concept of impromptu (and I put that forward as one possible meaning if it) are suckers? Here I was, thinking you had been working on thinking like a mentalist... oh well. LTS!
(By the way even impromptu classic effectsm like psychological forces - requires certain amount of people to increase the odds, certain demographics, sometimes the ability to do math etc... in fact, all effects are bound by conditions - the less the better but often the most powerful effcts have a ton of conditions - hence why when you can do it it is incredible)... Slim! C'mon - put out your definition! This thread can be a valuable discussion on what the heck impromptu means to many and how ad copies should be written!

The wikipedia definition for IMPROMPTU is a magicians trick that can be done without props or preparation before hand...something like that.

Slim, consider the source.
For me, this effect has no props and I can do it without preperation. Impromptu does not mean unprepaired. |

I agree. It IS impromptu, however it is so limited in the environmental conditions that must exist that the rate of performance success is very low. IMHO
Exactly WHO can perform it is also a problem...Some people would need a prop. Others wouldn't.

I agree with you 100%. Like every effect out there, some coditions are required. And some may need a prop, where as other's don't.

As a musician you may already know that impromtu's original meaning was something akin to an unwriten solo. Winging it. No music, just winging it....Take it Steve!
Relying on the riffs that you've gathered beforehand, not needing any other preparation...just your experience. If someone needs a doule headded coin or a bent penny in your pocket, well that isn't IMPROMPTU to me.

Impromptu miracles can be done with NW and PW - but of course you need a NW or a PW device to do them - hence why I leave home with Lincoln's Best PP every day for the last year or so... with at least one wallet with a way to l*** in a folded up sticky... that always kills and appears impromotu... everything needs a condition.

To me,this alway's seemed like something that should have just been published in one of the magic periodicals...you know as an interesting concept.
I did purchase it mainly because of some of the endorsement's and hype.[Hello sucker! ] Like I said,it's an interesting concept, that can work under 'optimal' conditions. However,I learned from my experience, and now I am more judicious and careful before purchasing anything. Best. Rich |
