Hi there,
I was pleased to be able to pick up my 4 new doves this Saturday. That makes the total 6 now. Last week I colored one Hot Pink and the other Deep Purple. They look great! Now I'm waiting for the new colors from Andy Amyx to color the rest. I'm going to make one Deep Yellow, one Peacock Blue, and one Lime Green. The last one I'll leave White or perhaps I'll combine the blue and green and get Turquoise. I also bought a pure white budgie that is already become very hand friendly. Perhaps I'll color him too! I think I'll leave the rabbit white, although he'd be easy to wash the color into. It would be very novel to have all the Doves one color and turn them into a Rabbit of the same color! Not sure how the audience would react so I'll pass on that. Not sure if I shouldn't have picked one color, or if I'm all right to have multi-techno colored birds? I could really play up and make a feature of the fact. Other than being wet and having to dry, the birds don't seem to mind at all. I also got a new spray that adds oil to the feathers to make them have a nice luster. The new vitamins will help in that regard too. So all is well here with all the birds and the 2 rabbits. I did get a call from a woman inquiring about adopting my older rabbit. As soon as the new one is ready to join the show in a few weeks, I'll find a good home for Merlin. I'll give him away for free; just charge $50 for the cage. Let me know if you've colored your doves and with any advice. Do you like the all one color or multi-color? Don't want to hear that I shouldn't do it at all, been through that debate and decided it was an artistic decision for each performer. If you have any words of encouragement let me know.

Whats up Chris,
Congratulations on getting more doves. I see you've taken the time out and made the decision whether or not you should color your birds. I Colored 5 of my birds using the method on the Frewin DVD's 4 green 1 Blue. They Look Really good until they start losing feathers, lol. I got tired of coloring them so I'm letting them go back to white. Be prepared for people after the show asking you ..." Did you paint your Birds "? Good luck... Nice color choices 2. |

If you want to do doves to a rabbit, with lots of different colored doves, just have the rabbit be tye-dye. This could look really good depending on your act.

I know have all 6 doves colored. 2 deep yellow, 1 electric blue, 1 lime green, 1 hot neon pink, 1 deep purple. I am even thinking of coloring my white budgie too! Perhaps a combo of the blue and green: aqua/ teal. There is so much flexibility in having birds any color you want. As was mentioned by another, it is a lot of work to keep the color looking good as the new feathers grow in. I think that about 3 weeks is all that looks really good.
After that it is a salt and pepper look that is not too bad but not as clean as the total colored ones. It does take several days for the birds to be back in top form though, as they need to recoat the feathers with the natural oils and preen their feathers so they are full. I found a spray that helps a lot and makes them look a little more shinny and healthy. The color can look very flat without the spray to moisturize them. All in all I am very pleased with the results and would recommend it to others. I'm still working on photos to post. I did a photo session a few weeks back and after the graphic designer has his way with them I'll get them up.

Hello,
I have colored doves for many years. The one piece of advice that I can offer is something that I've never heard any other Pro talk about. Which is, while transporting your colored doves, if they are in the same travel carrier, the color transforms from bird to bird (Rubs off of one bird to another). Constantly altering colors. So I had to transport birds which were seperated by color! All red birds in one carrier, white in another, etc.. It really can be a pain sometimes working with colored birds. I have now eliminated all colored birds from the act except for two. Which are only in right now because I haven't figured out how to do these two particular effects with plain white birds (The color matters). I hope this helps!

A dove worker in town was sharing some experiences with me...he was mentioning how some people in his shows were unhappy that the doves were colored unnatural colors... like blue. NO offense to those that do color their doves, but I wouldn't do it here. In singapore, there tend to be people that can be very sensitive to small issues.
I had an experience at a performance whereby I was asked to produce a license for performing with doves. funny eh... DOVE BOY may be able to fill us in in licensing in singapore |

For the people who have Greg Frewins DVDs coloring can be a negative. Not sure yet where the color is worth it or not.
What does coloring add to your act? Best, Brad

Depending on the act, coloring can have a significant impact. In early Greg Frewin days, he bounced yellow tennis balls that changed to yellow birds. Jason Byrd opens a ball of yellow play dough and produces a yellow dove. Using white doves in those cases wouldn't have as much impact.
Producing a white dove from a silk however, does look good.

Dave is right... Color can be an important factor. I'm sure your telling yourself that the ball could have been white, and the playdough could have been white aswell (to produce non-colored doves), BUT some people like to use different colored props instead of constant white props for white doves.
It all really depends on the magician. I think I remember seeing that Greg Frewin was in a green and yellow costume aswell as green and yellow props, so it would make sense and flow with the colors to have green and yellow doves. Some magicians only color one or two of their doves... Not for the simple fact of coloring them, but for instance rubbing a white dove with a blue silk and having the white dove turn into a blue dove. -Vinnie |

For what it's worth; several years ago I had the privilege of attending one of General Grant's last lectures and seeing him perform in the evening show at a Bob Little convention.
Gen colored his doves. He said that it added interest to the act since they were not all the same. I think it comes down to personal preference. As far as the knuckle heads, er, I mean, the sensitive, concerned, animal lovers out there, You can be sure that no matter what you do, someone will object to it. Do what works for yo and makes your clients happy. However, in the unlikely event I am ever asked to perform at a P.E.T.A. function, I will leave my animals at home and tell my wife to wear her polyester coat.
