Some people know just when to use specific words in their patter. When I watch comedy on HBO I compare comedians all the time and wonder what makes them funnier than the others. Here is just one example of my personnal observation, comparing George Carlin to Whoopi Goldberg. They both use the "F" word all the time. George appears to have a bigger vocabulary list than Whoopi and when he uses that word, it has a bigger comic impact. Whoopi appears to have shorter story lines with less words, and when she uses that word, it used more often to the point where it becomes annoying and less comic impact.
Comedians work hard on their comic routines and magicians should do the same thing. I just read the recent Smithsonian magazine about comedian Phyllis Diller who donated her personal archive of proven punch lines. Diller's 48-drawer, alphabetized catalog of material in a file cabinet on rollin wheels that contain 50,000 or so punch lines. This artickle explains how she takes these jokes for a test drive with people, and if it works "keep it," and if it does not work just throw it out. I guess this is how a magician should practice and test their materail. Learning magic is a lot like body building, the more you do the bigger you get. Learn when to throw out the things you don't need. |

"Jargon"
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
