I've been putting off my Debut Night for years but I've been given "The Command" and have no choice but to do a 15 minute showcase in April. I've decided on the 7 magics that I'll do, which I can do sort of ok, but have no idea how to present it. (I never wanted to perform but just be in the circle but being an associate member is very restricting). The thought of doing this is filling me with dread and horror... Please give me ideas on how to present this little show, patter is my main worry, this is just not normally me... Help!!!

#1. Remember, everyone in the audience has gone through what you are about to go through, nervousness and all.
#2. No one here can help you on presentation or patter without knowing exactly what tricks you are going to perform. We're not mind readers, you know, and even the mind readers aren't REAL mind readers!
#3. You must have noticed by now that some members of the magic group are friendlier and more helpful to beginners than others. Approach the friendliest one you know and tell him how nervous you are and perhaps he will work with you and help you through your first performance.

I also wouldn't try to do to many different effects within a fifteen minute time slot. Seven seems like a high number, but I don't really know your style. Have a fast visual opener, and pick three other effects and try and build them up as impressive as you can. The best way to build presentation is to do the tricks repeatedly. Perform for everyone as much as you can from now to then. I sometimes try to think about what would impress myself, and work to that standard. Everyone is nervous before their first show, and because you are nervous makes me more confident that you will succeed. It seems to me that those extremely confident in the beginning seem to crash and burn faster than the peaple asking for advice. Oh and by the way good luck.

I would say do a maximum of five tricks using the following rules:

1: You can perform the trick in your sleep (once you can do that, you'll know that you'll do well with it).

2: Make sure you have your patter down, If it involves patter. Patter will take up more time than you think.

3: On the subject of patter, make sure you have it down, but don't make the patter more interesting than the trick...use it as misdirection.

4: Be confident..., "I think I can, I think I can." That's the attitude that will make you successful at it and other things.

Hope this helps,
