Hi there,

I have recently bough a fake sword that curls inside the mouth to make it look like you have swallowed it, and I just would like some helpful suggestions.

I would like to work it into my family magic routine, keeping it light-hearted but making them still think that it is a real sword swallow.

Any performance suggestions?

Many thanks

I would have to second the last post. Not to be a d**k but the people in this forum like to perform the stunts for real. There are other places on the Café that would be better for you to ask that question. You first of all will not be able to fool people with that sword as it does not look like a real sword. And it is sort of a slap in the face to those of us who actually have put the hard work into doing that stunt for real.

HEY

Im a real sword swallower...last time I checked...anyway Id say to just leave the sword out of the family act. If you want an impressive/funny/gross bit id say go with the beans through the eyes trick. Not the ligit thing but the slight of hand version usuing 4 beans. There are versions on the dvd geek magic and in magic for dummies.

My reasoning is this.

While I don't personaly conisder it to be a slap in the face. (people who see you do your trick and me do my stunt will be able to tell the diffrence) you may not want to do somthing that is commonly asociated with ummmm a diffrent sort of deep throughting if you know what I mean infront of a family audience. Also kids may atempt to recreate this no matter how manny times you say not to try it at home (cause that's where most of us learn lol)

The bean trick is in my opinion better because you can talk the whole way though and add your own jokes and it will make a nicer piece in the end. But once agian any sort of geek stuff is a questionable idea for kids.

Who knows bottom line do whats you

It's fake, and degrades our art...don't even do it.

Hi there,

Thanks for the opinions guys! I was really looking for your opinions on the matter, for which I thank you dearly!

My other performance suggestion, which I am now thinking more of doing, is to start it like a sword swallow, but reveal the curled up bit from my mouth as a joke. This way, the kids know it wasn't real and it would get a good laugh.

Thanks all the same guys!

Many thanks

Another "cute" way to show that it's a fake is by "swallowing" the gaff in a direction impossible to do with a real sword. Don't swalllow up to down, try faking it front to back, as if it would be going in your mouth and out through the back of your head.

I like the fake out joke the best. Because you can get some shock value from doing the sword bit and then reveil the joke. Its a great tension release on the audience.

Try it you'll like it.

OLD Clown GAG
sit on a stool Swallow the sword (fake) when you stand up the stool is stuck to your butt, like the sword went all the way through! (use magnets, Velcro, whatever' best for you)
but seriously
If you are gonna do it then definitely do the gaff revel bit.
do the trick but a little over half way turn you head away and cough(but your hands and the fake stay where they were)
or as they applaud turn your head and say thank you (like the ping Pong ball trick)

Those are AWESOME, Larry! I like the stuck-to-the-chair bit... kinda funny... don't know how well it would work for a real swallow tho.

Does it have to go into your family show?

Maybe start with the sword at the other end instead of your mouth.

I doubt any little kid would try that!

Many swordswallowers do it in their act.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the comic endings guys! You've helped me a lot!

BTW to all those real sword swallowers out there reading this post, you probably think I'm just trying to do what you do but without the skill. This is not the case, and I truly respect those who can do what I can't! At the end of the day, we learn by talking to those who know different things to us.

Thanks for all your help and I will work some of these ideas into my act!

Many thanks

I take no offence! Do whats you. Have fun. But Id say play it stait first...ham it up...then give the audience that laugh and relief in the end...its a nice little emotional roller coaster...

I thought for a line...

"Ladies and gentalmen this is what sword swallowing looks like...(swallow the sword...then expose the joke) I said that's what it looks like I cant acualy do it! That would be crazy!"

Well if youve got nothin gbetter give it a shot.
