I have a friend who is really interested in rose magic, but has absolutely no idea where to start. He really wants to learn a few decent productions, the less gimmicked the better, and he really wants the flower(s) to be real.
What I'm asking is: What are some sources (books, dvds, lecture notes, ect) that would have what I'm looking for. Thanks for any help! ~Jonathan

There are some things geared specifically towards rose magic, but you may find more by looking more into Wand effects. Many of the older books (Hugard, Thurston, Leat) from Lybrary.com or a local magic dealer, have a wide array of classical effects that utilize a magic wand, which can be converted to a rose in many cases. It will take a little creativity, but not as much as trying to create from scratch.
Make sure he learns to make a paper rose. There are a few versions out there, I have The Kevin James Floating Rose video that David Copperfield used, and it has been absolutely invaluable to me, and I don't actually perform the effect! I am sure you can find plenty of effects in Tarbell with magic wands as well. Just think outside the box a little, you could also do things with just the flower without the stem. In this case you can utilize many ball manipulations just converted to use with the head of the flower. Just some ideas, hope they help. Matt

Thanks for the ideas. I've been making napkin roses for quite some time (learned from simon lovell).
I own the Tarbell set and I didn't find much flower manipulation, but I never really thought about looking into wand manipulation. Roses are a bit different from wands in the sense that they have to be handled much more gently. Thanks again for the help... ~Jonathan

Watch some videos of Rocco's stage act. He does some manipulation with roses. Jessica Reed also does some things combining roses and birds. Don't know of any books or dvd's. maybe watching some acts utilizing this prop will inspire to create, but not to copy.

There is a video out that deals entirely on rose magic and magic with real roses. You might be intersted in looking it up. It is called "Rose Magic by Monty". Hope this helps.

Your friend must decide what it is he wants to do with roses. Real roses are delicate to handle and manipulate. Silk roses look great but do not compress and expand as well as feather roses. Each has their own limitations and advantages.
The suggestions already made are very good. Karrel Fox also had a simple blooming rose in one of his books. I make several rose effects that can be seen on the website. I would be happy to help with some ideas if your friend gives a little more direction in where his interests lie. Richard

I have the video myself. It is not too bad and he covers off on some nice ideas and thoughts using real roses etc. From the video itself it reads;
You will learn a complete short routine with real roses. This routine consists of 4 rose productions, 3 rose vanishes and finishes with one rose splitting into 2 roses that can be given to the audience. You will also learn several methods of producing a single real rose as well as simple methods for producing several roses with a vase. We will cover off on the care and handling of roses for magic as well as specialized roses for magic. You will also learn two methods for making a rose appear as if it is floating without the use of threads. One method requires no props at all and can be performed at any time. I hope this information is of some help to you all. Kyle

This information is perfect. I was thinking about a single rose production or a dozen from cane and the video sounds like it may give me great ideas to expand upon. Stay Well Ken |

I have Monty's rose magic DVD and it does have a few good effects. He also goes over some commercially avaiable roses that he demonstrates. He has a wonderful splitting of one rose into two that is probably the best part of the DVD.
I also perform a rose manipulation act and my advice is to go to your local craft store and just spend a day studying and buying many different types of plastic roses. You will soon come up with your own gimmicked effects and rose productions with a little effort and time spent on making them.
As magicians we create what onlookers call magic. If they truly believe in what we have created for them to witness then magic is real!!!
