I had my first real mentalism show today. I have been working on psychic like effects in my routines/shows for about the past year. After many arguments here at the Café', I said why not try the psychic role. If you've never done it, its powerful. I was peering into beautiful young womens eyes, and revealing their past, present, and future. I pulled out a deck of cards, and everyone was weirded out by using the cards in the routine, but it worked. I talked about the history of cards and how they reveal things about people, after all they were originally created for divination?!? I limited the magic and just performed some really awesome mental effects. The think a card, some card levitations, etc. When asked how I did these feast, and was I a faker or for real? I said I'm a sort of a magi, I was trained with a hightened intuition by mentors (psychics), and everyone is psychic to a degree, and avoided the faker comment. Was this wrong?!?I could have easily made a few converts to my new psychic followers, but decided their minds were better off just being mystified.

So why didn't you? Sounds like you chickened out at the last minute
Joking aside: Everyone remembers that person who has 'real' psychic powers (Uri Geller has remained on the lips of people for 30+ years) that they saw...but who remembers the name of that clever magician? Its up to you, you can play it for real, leave it open or partially open, or admit trickery (depending on your own ethical viewpoint) - but whatever you choose, follow through with it. Why go to all that effort playing the psychic then say at the end "well I am actually a magician" - its a bit like saying "Sorry guys, I am not psychic - you caught me out". Although I believe all the above to be true - its also rubbish, because if you've entertained then you've done what you're supposed to. You might just have taken off that edge or created a little disappointment at the end though. You don't have to start a religion - but by all means start a following. Regards, Kris Sheglova
The above is all rubbish, except that which you chose to believe

Some mentalists seem to be against the psychic angle but think telling other lies like its highly skilled reading of body language etc..
To me I've tried both approaches and really they are different ways of saying the same thing. They have just about the same powerful effect on your spectators. But at the same time we AREN'T magicians we create psychic or psychological illusions there is a distinct difference. And the illusion is that its for real and not a trick... So either of the above explanations are essential if you are a mentalist...otherwise you are just a magician. As for Geller just look what he has achieved with a note pad and a few spoons? (and a lot of guts) |

Hey shrink, I was edited for writing "balls" so look forward to an edit.
There's a Phantini effect (date with destiny) where you do a reading with "regular" cards. With some adaptation this has worked great for me. As far as what people think, I don't go out of my way either way, but if someone takes an interest in what I do I never claim to have any "powers". I'm an entertainer and what I do is for "entertainment purposes only" as most "legitimate" psychics display in tiny print but no one reads and believes or just blows off as legal mumbo jumbo.

Congratulations Zodiac,
I hope your next show may be much more succesful. When people ask me if I am a faker or a real psychic, I say that "I am an ordinary human who knows something which the others did not learn yet. The only difference is the knowledge. There is no super-human in the world the only thing which makes difference is the knowledge" This satisfies them and it is not a lie.
Magically Yours,

Tora, nice politicians attitude. Alexandre, I like the Phantini effect. Playing cards are so more modern and unfakable (I think)? Three girls called me for more information on readings today, its on my voice mail, I wish I could record them and let you hear them.

Why not play-up the psychic angle -- reality is such a subjective thing. I think that people believe in psychics because they can't afford a shrink. But a psychic can get better results! LOL!
I'm going to put some work into learning how to do readings. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the effect is much greater if the audience thinks that there may be no secret to the effect. |
