Thanks, 1KJ. The ad copy - "Uses a borrowed deck, is practically self-working, fools everyone..." gives the impression that there will be something in the tutorial on doing the effect with a borrowed deck. As you state, it can be done with some planning and routining, but I'm a little surprised that "borrowed deck" is advertised as a feature if it's not covered.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Max,
I agree. I'm not very good at culling cards, so I'm pretty happy with my handling of setting the deck in the process of pulling out four black and four red cards for oil & water. I set the Aces to the top and sixes and nines on the bottom. At the end, I place a full house of sixes and nines on top of the Aces. After a quick false shuffle, I get into the effect. I rather like the sequence, but I agree with you, I think it should have been covered better. I think it's lazy of magicians putting out effects to not cover how to get into the effect and how to end the effect. KJ |

I love this trick. I only use it on days with a full moon and do it either outside at night or inside next to a window where we can see the moon. So I only do this at most five to six times a year. My presentation is to talk about the lunar effect and how I read about this process in a boy scout magazine when I was a kid and I've been trying it ever since. Of course, we go through the procedure and I have just four random cards that signify nothing, but the participant has four aces. I get really excited and start calling that person moon girl or moon boy. It's happened a few times that I'll be hanging out with people and I'll call someone there moon girl. Another person will be like, "wait, he calls you that too?" and then they talk about their experience. This is quite amusing.

This is one of the tricks I've done the most over the last 22 years. I've never had an issue with the overhand shuffle but that's due to the scripting I use. I have them slide one card, then another, then another more quickly, then another, then clumps (literally never failed... at the overhand portion using this). I have had people intentionally mess up the Jay Ose Cut so I've removed that from my handling (a great cut, just not my favorite in this effect).
More recently, I've used this with alphabet cards to have the participants spell their name. Ideally, it works when they have a name that has a letter in common with my name. I spell out my word, point out they can't have spelled their name since the number of cards are wrong, then when they can spell their name, cross-word style with mine, it's a nice visual. You remind the clients of your name (or a theme, prediction, etc., I guess I should make it obvious when I say name, I really just mean WORD). Here, I'll even throw this in, but cryptically: you can let them choose the number of piles to be dealt too, depending on what the end is going to look like. For Kings and Aces, ask for number from between 1-10. For 2, divide the deck into two piles and progress, for 3, divide the deck into 3 piles (discarding the middle pile and progress normally), 4 is each person makes four piles, 5 is each person makes 5 piles (to make full poker hands), 6 is my favorite and I am not sharing here, 7 is a variation on 6, 8 is two sets of 4 piles, 9 is a variation of 6, and 10 is a variation on 5 (two sets of five piles). This effect is spectacular! |

I was fortunate enough to come across this download by Chad Long not too far into my magic journey. It was well within the grasp of a beginner in my opinion. For me, it has always played huge and really allows your spectator to feel like they're part of the magic.
Chris, I love your additions of using letters, I had considered the same idea, but the crossword style reveal would play very cool! I also like the idea of allowing the spectator to choose the piles, I will have to give that some thought. Has anyone tried this with two participating spectators each handling half the deck and you just mime what you want them to do? With the letter addition and crossword style reveal that Chris mentions above, that could be a very fun reveal for friends or couples. This is my first real post on the Café, so take it easy on me! Thanks! |

Just last night I did a dry run of the "Parallaxis" deck on the Mrs. I started with Jay Ose cut -- which I've done for the Mrs many times unfailingly. But last night in spite of my indications of the order to reassemble the packets, this time she attempted to place the top packet on the bottom packet! Horrors! I stopped her and pointed to the second packet. The effect still was baffling to her but of course she was aware of me not allowing her to freely reassemble the packets. That has now put the fear in me regarding the Jay Ose cut! Of course, that is one fail out of many, many successes of directing the spectator. The solution fo rme wuill be to allow them to cut the packets but I will *always* reassemble after time misdirection! Phil |
