I posted this in another forum, but I need some fairly quick feedback, so I thought I'd move it over here where it might get more traffic! Thanks!

I am in a magic club at Georgia Tech, and we decided to create a team in order to raise money for Relay for Life this year. I was looking for some general fund raising tips. We have planned on tabling in our student center for a couple days to try and raise some money, but I think there have to be some other ideas out there! We are a pretty inexperienced group though, so we probably couldn't do anything large-scale like a stage show. I've tried going through residence halls to raise some funds, but that turned out empty. Any ideas would help, even if they don't involve magic!

And, if you happen to be motivated to donate to our team, you can PM me if you'd like! I'll give you a link that sends you directly to the donation page of the Relay for Life chapter at Georgia Tech! Thanks!

(If this isn't the right spot for this....don't hesitate to move it! I thought it might fit here though...)

L2andall, good luck with your benefit, I participated in a couple of the relay for life events in New Jersey. It's a very important cause.

One possible means to make some money at the event is to have a booth with water available (for sale) and have some magic demonstrations going on, with a tip jar set out for donations to go toward Cancer research etc. These people are here to help out in any way and many are very willing to donate.

Before the event you can do something similar on campus. Set up a booth or a table in an area that is appropriate, and have fliers about the Relay for Life available for hand out as well as the donation jar. And once again, be doing demonstrations...or do a Trick for a Donation.

Whatever you do, good luck with it.

Thanks Habu! That's a good idea about having flyers out for RFL. Makes is seem a little bit more official I suppose, and perhaps that could make people feel more secure donating to the cause. Also, the water idea is a good one! I'll let you know how it goes!

When you set up your table, draw people to the table with a magic trick. When a spectator stops to watch, inform them that you are raising funds for Relay For Life, then ask for a $5.00 or $10.00 donation to see another amazing magic trick. If you don't ask, they may only toss in $1.00. Don't be afraid to ask, sometimes people say yes.

Until we appear again,

Tip jars are good. If you have to buy snacks or drinks, buy them in bulk, a store like Sam's Club or Costco. Trust me, it will help on money.
