Several years ago I built a Modern Art from the Steinmeyer book. The illusion is beautiful, but at the time I couldn't figure out how to attach the top to the base where it would slide easily and come apart for traveling, so I chose the "slide easily" option and used some heavy duty drawer glides. They do slide well, but they are a pain to disassemble for transport.
If any of you has a Modern Art with a different sliding mechanism (Jim Steinmeyer tells me that he thinks many were built with dovetailed Delrin slides), I would appreciate some assistance, verbally and/or pictorially, so that I can replace the drawer glides with something more practical. A PM would be greatly appreciated.

Why P.M.?
As this would not "give away" the method, perhaps others (like myself) would be interested in the solutions. Might be informative for use in other illusions. I would make a note in my J.S. book also. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

For what it's worth , here's what Jim wrote to me. I would like to see a photo, however, before I start my renovation.

Jim described exactly how the prototype by Owen Redwine was built. I've got the very same model and its been in my show for over ten years now. Owen still builds the very best one on the market, the rest are just copies.

Obviously, mine is a copy, but it is a "legit copy"...
I just wish the plans were a bit more detailed.

I'm sorry .. I understand it's a legitimate copy. Its just a bit much for someone to dive into illusion building and expect them to come up with answers to all the problems. For example, the Osborne plans are the best out there .. but still very vague. I've built plenty of stuff .. but the plans are just the guide lines for the construction of an illusion.

Being the kind sort of person that I am, I gave this a bit of thought, and my first reaction was to suggest bolting one side of the guides to some thin metal strips, a little longer than the closed guide, which you might then be able to attach to the prop with wing nuts.... but then I realised that the wing nut at one end would probably foul the slide! ....... !
Then, I remembered, that MY kitchen drawers are on ball bearing type runners... and they have a plastic clip at on end which allows the drawer to be removed! Which, I would suggest is exactly what you are looking for..... on the downside, I've never seen these in the stores... but they must be available somewhere! PM me if you think this could work... I'm away for the next few days, but could e-mail you a photo next week if you think it might help. (I can even get you the contact details of the company that supplied my kitchen.. but it IS in the UK.) |
