As a response to Channel 2's Uri Geller program, now the second major TV network in Israel, Channel 10, is airing a program called "The Power", where people with real supernatural powers are examined. It is emphasized at the beginning of the program that no trickery is used. There is a panel of judges (alas, no magician amongst them), consisting of two believers and two skeptics.
I was watching the first program tonight. From a pool of a hundred people, ten were to be selected. This is the description of one of the tests: In a room sit a father, and two of his daughters, with a mask on their faces (though all of them share the same dark skin shade, so everyone should suspect a family connection). The psychics have to determine what is the connection of these people. All of them use cold reading, and most fail miserably: "I see something to do with business..." DANG, failed. "He saved their lives..." failed. failed. failed. failed....... failed. until someone goes: "I see a family connection. Father and his daughters." WOW!!!! "How did he know?" The believer amongst the judges asks the skeptic: "now how do you explain that??" And the skeptic judge stupidly replies "I take my right to remain silent for now". WHAT?? You are supposedly the skeptic judge and you "remain silent"? Don't you know the very first thing about probability and statistics?? At the end of the program, following a few other such completely stupid tests, 10 people are selected. In the following weeks they will demonstrate their real powers. They asked each about their powers. These are a few of the replies (I am literally quoting what they said): "I connect with angels and fairies" (Hmm... no Santa?) "I receive messages from angel Rafael" (wow, she even knows his name!) "I mainly work in the field of extra-galactic messages" (I guess her powers don't work within our own galaxy...) And the best of all: "I deal with energies in the 10th dimension" (am I the only idiot who hasn't heard of the other dimensions in between?!) I almost hit the roof watching this program. Probably the stupidest program in the history of Israeli TV... I changed to Channel 2. What do I find? "The police have arrested the psychic who has taken 200,000 shekels from a woman [about $50,000] to remove a curse from her. He also took jewelry from another woman to remove a curse on her grandson and to prevent his death in a car accident." Why have the police arrested him? He has kept his promise, her grandson's car accident indeed did not happen! Why don't the police arrest that woman for stupidity? It's really a pity stupidity isn't painful... :wow: |

You don't need to be a cold reading expert to know that. Also, there were probably lots of edits and misses that they didn't show. At least Natan Zehavi is there, he's a pretty cool skeptic who isn't afraid to say it all the time. Though he shouldn't have exposed the fake thumb secret. |

If Mr. G's program is/was so poorly accepted, why are the networks still airing similar shows? Someone beside you dudes must be watching?
Someone is paying for the ads...correct?

Even now the timing is not so good, as most people here got sick of this special powers stuff. TT2, you are talking about the others from Lost? They still stay on that darn island. |

The ratings of the first episode were pretty low and all the reviews said how unethical and danegerous this show could be for those who are going to believe that.
But I think that if you see it only as a comedy, then it's not that bad. Not every day we get to see a reality show about people who claim they have little angels standing on their shoulders. |
