When I apply contact paper the secret things underneath show up like crazy! Even as thin as they are every bump is noticeable. It looks like a topography map. This is unacceptable! Is there a way to prevent this?

Buy something already made with contact paper? That might be the easiest way

Glue down a sheet of plastic, with a square for the secret stuff cut out. That way it will all be one level surface when you apply the contact paper. Try 3-ring binder protector sheets.
