I'm about to buy an Ali Bongo hat and find that the prices vary anywhere from $19 to $30. Are some hats better made to outlast others? Who has the most durable or are they pretty much all the same?

They look different as well. One of the two I 've seen looks better.

Hi Frank: I'd like to know who carries the better of the two hats.

If you are a "do-it-yourselfer" you can make your own "Growing Hat" from the article in The Wizards' Journal #8 (on my site) called "A Hat For All Seasons." The advantages are that you are not limited to someone else's colors or the final face(s) that can be used. You also end up with a much larger hat for a double surprise ending. Tyvec blank paper for the hat is also available for the DIY magician.

I have both, I like the one with four changes. I have used the one that folds smaller and has holes for the eyes for a kid to see out through, but it doesn't play any better and doesn't handle as well.

I have Spellbinder's "A Hat For All Seasons" and it's great, you can show Two faces at the end, yep double surprise.

Hey Spellbinder, thanks for the suggestion, I think I'll probably invest in the hat that you mentioned. I'd like to have something slightly different than everyone else.

I have done the Bongo Hat for over ten years. It is a staple in my shows. They do come in different styles. Search and find the one you like best. My best advice to not to copy someone elses routine. It is basically a sight gag. I use it as a transition to another routine in my show. There are instructions on how to handle it. Use this to start but it allows for many handlings. Do it the way you like and what you are most comfortable with. Make it your own and you will do better then copying somone else. Practice your handling and what you say when performing it. Even though it is not really strong on the magic side, like anything, practice will make your handling smoother. I have had great reactions from children with it and it is one of my favourite routines. Do it with this in mind in front of the right audience and you will have success with it.

The rights to the original, designed and approved by Ali himself, belonged to and still belong to Magic, Inc. in Chicago. I saw Ali Bongo perform it in their little theatre a few times over the years, their version was quite sturdy and quite funny.
