How do I go about trimming my birds nails? Is there any way to do it without discomfort to the birds.

Jonathan: There are several ways to trim the nails. First, use a pair of pet nail trimmers to clip off the ends. You just have to be sure not to cut back into the small red blood line running through the center of the nail. The second is to run an emery board over the tip. I usually hold the bird while my wife does the dirty work. Neither method will cause any discomfort to the bird. Remember, you just want to clip off the very tip of the nail so it isn't pointed or sharp.

Careful... even when trimming carefully you can accidently clip too far up and hit the vein. Make sure you have a stiptic stick handy or some sugar... which will help stem the flow of blood. The little guys don't have much to lose... so be really careful. Vet visits are expensive too!

Good advice, omnibozo. They do sometimes give a little kick just at the wrong moment.
Jon, there is also something called quik stop you can get in most pet shops. That works great also. It's only happened to me once so don't get too nervous about it. Just stay away from that little red blood line.

Good idea, Martin. Perches covered in sandpaper also works.
