I've done some of this long ago, and just tried it out again. It makes for some very interesting voices. One of them sounds like HAL.
More than a couple phrases gives that hyperventilation feeling, but this might pass. I'm more concerned over possible damage to the voice. Anyone do it / tried it, or have info on the potential long term impact on the vocal cords? Thanks Jim |

Breathing in speech was learned from this writer from the wonderful tapes of Pat Fraley..(greatest cartoon voices smuggled from hollywood)
I haven't considered them for vent but use it with some of my characters. You are a character said Nigel... I can't do that Dave...(said HAL) side note anyone here where HAL came from ..the name reference...No prize to first responder...but I digress once again. Harris

I got it from the movie "Space Odyssey," But I did find one reference that says HAL is one letter prior to IBM. Interesting.
From WIKI: HAL 9000 (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) is a fictional character in the Space Odyssey series, the first being the novel and film 2001: A Space Odyssey, written by Arthur C. Clarke in 1968. HAL is an artificial intelligence, the sentient on-board computer of the spaceship Discovery. HAL is usually represented only as his television camera "eyes" that can be seen throughout the Discovery spaceship. The voice of HAL 9000 was performed by Canadian actor Douglas Rain. HAL became operational on January 12, 1997 (1992 in the movie) [1] at the HAL Plant in Urbana, Illinois, and was created by Dr. Chandra. In the 2001 film, HAL is depicted as being capable not only of speech recognition, facial recognition, and natural language processing, but also lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting emotions, expressing emotions and reasoning. |

HAL being one letter removed from IBM was intentional. I think Big Blue would have had major objections if it was seen that one of their machines violated the three laws of robotics. Of course, I'm assuming that an AI would be programmed with them.

There is a great bit on Tencious D's debut album called "Inward Singing"
It is very funny (but lots of swearing) |

You do realise you'll have to pay the postage on the prize Harris isn't sending.
Talking of weird breathing, people often say that Rolf Harris can breathe in through his nose while breathing out from his mouth. Is that true? I tried talking while inhaling and either get a flabbergasted whisper or the screech of a constipated owl. George |

The postage is well worth the "No Prize." Thanks Harris. I'm working on a mat and frame for mine as we speak.
I wouldn't call it breathing, but I can expel air from my mouth while breathing in through my nose. With all the bones an owl eats, I could see why one might screech, were it constipated. |

I "Marvel" at the things we can do with our voices and "No Prizes".
On the other side I remember a vent that does a bit after putting tape(masking/duct/) over his mouth. (but I digress) No prizes are sent via email. If a beginner vent does a show in an empty forest do their lips move... Now and zen.... Harris
