I'm looking at adding healed and sealed soda can into my street show.
Anyone have any experience of how long you can leave the prepared can in a show case?
And how much leeway you have in carrying said case around?

Cheers

What do you mean by street show?

do you mean a show you're just going to do once? or a show that you will be repeating several times on a given day out on the street and you wish to repeat this effect each time?

If you know how the effect is done you probably have a good feel for the answer to the last question already.

I do a busking circle show. So - multiple times, yes.

I'm concerned about leaking.

Although having done a couple of tests it seems the can is less prone to leak if it's prepared but not actually crushed.

I'm trying to find ways to deal with the necessary prep of this without needing to do it 'at the venue.'

Keeping it cold till a while before the show will extend it's use for quite a long time.
I've seen someone do it and they just kept the can's in a cooler that they kept their lunch in all pre worked and ready to go then about a half hour before the show would pull it out and have it set for performance

I find that it does not last very long no matter what. I do not think it is worth the hassle especially for a show you will be doing multiple times.

doesn't seem much like a circle show routine to me anyway

Depends on the context. Performed as an incidental passing thing as the notes describe - no. Performed simply as the effect, maybe not. But performed for a reason - I think so.

But then again I saw someone close with it as their finale and have it kill. So. Maybe as an effect as well.

I think it's worth trying out. If it doesn't work or isn't worth the trouble I'll leave it be.

One of the Magicians at Halifax Buskers festival the year I did it.
Patrick Drake or whoever the other magician that year was. Not sure which one, this was 2005.

Dan,
Why does it fit your act at that moment? Is there something more practical we can talk you into with a similar feel?

I'm looking for a visual trick with a can that doesn't destroy the drink.

Also pouring the drink needs to be the climax not 'let's get this drink out of here so we can see the awesome thing I've done to the can"

Point me in another direction.

How about the comedy funnel routine.

Pour water from a can into a cup, it disappears, and ends up coming out of some kid's elbow back into the can at the end.

Lots of room for funny business.

I would suggest doing THAT bit of the set up right before the performance.

I often have a can half preped, the part that would not allow for leak, and have the can around and "drink" from it throughout my performance, and finish it at one point.

At any point during your performance you can have, say, a TT with a p*n poked through the tip so you can put the TT on and finish the prep by just picking up the can.

I drain some by drinking by that preped spot, again, just casually throughout my performance, and then when it is "finished" I crush it and set it aside.

Later on, pick it up withing for another drink, and perform away.

I won't forget you Robert.

Ya, I had a feeling that's who you where talking about.
Patrick is a member here, just PM him, or go to his website (www.patrickdrake.com) and ask him yourself how he does it.
Personally, I always thought of that too. With the delecate preperation of the can, transportation really would be a hassle. I don't know how he transports, but what I do know, however, is that he ends his act with it, and the audience loves it.

I personally think Glen gave us the answer to the problem.

Have a can, have the can half prepared (part which doesn't have to do with can leaking) and pretend to drink from it all show. In the middle of the show, get the TT as he mentioned, and as you throw the can into the special spot, you can gimmick the can. The special spot can be a faked garbage can or even a recycling box.

Then later, when you go to pick it up, crush it.

Does that not suit your performance?

Very good idea Glen!

I've discovered new idea to seal up the can. Without exposing anything, you can use a bat and metal gimmick. I bought a cell phone magnet and it was supplied with round metal sticker. The magnet is concealed in your sleeve. So you can steal the special something off to your sleeve and then slowly move your hand over the can. So it looks like your hand over the can and then it's sealed.

This works and it doesn't look like you're stealing something or wiping something. Btw, sorry my poor English.

Well, the drinking routine sounds impressive, but has that actually been done? Cause it sounds tricky...the stealth-draining part that is. When I street-mage, I have a prepped can (crushed & all) with some w*x to hold things together, stashed in a nearby trashbin or just lying around as litter. Once placed, I have about 13 minutes to (effectively) perform the trick, so it's early in the act.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.
