Here's customer service from HL: They sent me an unwrapped DVD with the DVD banging around inside. Evidently the Elves forget to snap it back into place after watching. Selling a used DVD as new is simply fraud. They also charged full price on an item which was supposed to be discounted. If an item does not qualify, they clearly state
that the customer would be notified before sending. Nope another lie. Of course a large fraction of people have received good service, but an astonishingly large fraction of people have also received poor service. Why take the chance? Mark |

I'd like to correct myself. Magic.org has great service. They did reply to my inquiry, only I found it hidden in my spam folder. I placed and order with my friend and the books came here fast.. considering I'm in Manila.
imagine the possibilities... endless...

I too am a strong supporter of H&R Magic Books. They have a huge selection, a very knowledgeable staff and fair pricing.
Williams Magic has been mentioned here, and they too are great. One of the best magic shops I have ever visited. I am going to be viiting family in Tucson at the end of July and Williams Magic is the one place I HAVE to go while in town. I will probably make two trips into the store during the 5 days I am in town. Unfortunately, the rest will be devoted to family. Paul |

At least you are luckier than me Josh, It's been 9 months now and I never received my first (and last) order from Hank Lee. They have charged my credit card including the shipping and handling for something they never send.

I vowed long ago never to use HL again. Ever! AND... I even still have a store credit with him (not one that was offered to me, it is one that I had to make multiple long distance calls to receive(!!).
HL, you can keep the money you owe me. You're just too much of a risk, and too much of a hassle to deal with. Lesson most certainly learned. |

Actually, we're doing that now, but still having to notify customers manually. Soon it will be an automated process. In the meantime, I removed several from the ban list and now only block about six countries. Otherwise, we ship worldwide, everyday! - Aaron Smith http://www.magic.org |

First, about shipping. Shipping costs are often determined by the shipping companies, not by the dealer. Good dealers do what they can to find the least expensive shipping, but once an item goes overseas, then there may not be a cheap alternative. For those of you in Europe, try sending a book that weighs 1 kg to the States. See what it costs. Don't forget to add the cost of the shipping box and the packing material. If the shipping is low, then the profit needs to be made up somewhere else.
Regarding Tannen's. You must be joking Spencer. They are the snottiest, rudest people I have ever dealt with. If you don't live in Noo Yawk, then you are a hick, and they don't give a spit. I ordered a set of the Garcia cups from them a while back. It was supposed to come with a bag, a set of balls and a book. The bag and balls were not included, and neither was the book. I called to ask about this. Their reply, "Uh. The listing is wrong. There are no balls and bag." "What about the book?" "Oh, it's just the Tom Osborne book. Don't you already have that?" "YES I ALREADY HAVE IT! I PAID FOR THE ^*&(*%)$# BOOK AND I WANT IT!" Hank Lee is a different situation. When I was beginning to collect cups, I wanted a set of Gazzo cups. The only place that listed them on the internet was Hank Lee. School for Scoundrels was out of them. So I called up. I got an elf. "Do you have the Gazzo Cups in stock?" "Yes." "Can you actually see them from where you are sitting?" "Yes." "Can you put your hands on them right now?" "Yes." "Okay. I want them," and I gave them my credit card info. Two weeks later, no cups. So I called them. "Where are my cups." "We had to back order them?" "WHAAAAATTTT????" "We've been out of them for months. Can't get them." "You told me you could see them from where you were sitting. That you could put your hands on them." "Uhhhhh" "Let me speak to Hank." So I spoke to Hank. I told him the whole story. He replied "BSBSBSBSBSBS" (I'm paraphrasing now.) So I told him to forget about them, cancel the order and credit my card. It still took several weeks for the credit to come through. Now, here's what I would advise you when you order from any dealer. ANY dealer. If they don't fill your order within a reasonable length of time, I think the federal guideline is 30 days, you can check on that, call them, cancel the order, and if they don't refund your money in 14 days, dispute the transaction. If you pay via paypal, you have 45 days to dispute a transaction. Do not let ANY dealer take your money without sending your merchandise.

Just like airlines, everyone has their own shop loyalty and good/bad experiences. My only suggestion on this thread is to read them all, and then just go for it based on what seems to be balance overall where for just about every shop, people have good AND bad to say about it.
That said, and yes, I know people have had other than good experiences, I tend to work with Daytona Magic and Williams Magic (in Ariz). Both have good inventory, good selection, and when you talk on the phone, you get answers (not always the ones you want, but real answers) before you buy. I also know that Williams has great price matching policies, and while I don't know the official line from Daytona, call, and I'm sure Harry will try to work with you. FWIW....

I recently E mailed HL for an out of print book he claimed to have both Volumes 1 AND 2 of on his site. Not only that you could order them in bulk. I asked if any were in. His reply was "We are out of stock at the moment, but some will be in shortly". Keep in mind this book has been out of print for a decade.

Yeah, it's pretty much common knowledge that Hank Lee's customer service is crap, at least with online orders.
If I'm ordering online I usually check http://www.magicproshop.com You can see what they have in stock in real time, they ship fast, and have good customer service. Recommended. |

I'm in the UK, but I had fantastic international service from H&R, really could not be faulted, went the extra mile etc etc.
For sites within the UK, I've used Magic Books by Post several times, they have an extensive and very interesting catalogue, they've been good to deal with on the phone if I've had any queries, and they've posted quickly. And in general, check out magicians own websites - some may be not so great, so do some research first if in doubt, but I've had great service from such diverse people as John Carney, Doug Dyment, Jerry Sadowitz, Jarle Leirpoll, and Lewis Jones. |
