I need help. My wife and I are planning a vacation to Los Angeles/Anaheim in the middle of June for a week. I need some cost efficient ideas for getting around. I called a few places that state I have to be 25 to get a rental car. I'll be 23 by April... Taxi Cabs have a standard rate in L.A. of $42.00 from LAX to Downtown L.A.
Thanks for the ideas. Brian |

Check Super Shuttle for prices to/from the airport...depends where you want to go and what you want to see. There are always public buses, and I'd advise just trying to check out things in the same area at the same time, i.e. spend your Orange County days in Orange County, and your Los Angeles days in Los Angeles, and sort of "geographically cluster" whatever you can. When you're in Orange County, check out Aladdin Books on Commonwealth just west of Harbor...it's close to Anaheim, and he specializes in magic (and film) books.

Living in the area just between the parts you are talking about, I may be of some help. Call the car renatl agencies asap, shop around for deals. The supershuttle is a fairly inexpensive way to get from an airport to a hotel, but unless you have friends to shuttle you everywhere, mas transit down here just isn't all that good. The age limit is an issue, but sometimes you can get around that if you have a connection through your company or something like that. If you must rely on taxi cabs, plan to spend a lot of money. It is true that you can get reasonable rates to the big attractions, sometimes throught he hotel. Call the hotel soon and ask what they are willing to set up. The larger one's shouuld have that.
If by Anaheim you mean disneyland, plan to spend a lot of money on meals. If yo can get a hold of a car, and are willing to drive a mile or so away form the park to eat, you will cut your food bill easily down a third, maybe more. Keep in touch when you do come out. I live a mere 12 miles from disneyland, and a bit further from the rest of anaheim. Perhaps my wife and I can take you somewhere one evening.

Ugh (about the age issue). You really need a car to get around. I know there are people in L.A. who profess to get around by bus or taxi, but I don't know how they do it.
I just did a Google search of "rent a car in l.a., under 25 years old" and came up with some alternatives. Fox Rent a Car rents to younger drivers as does Alamo, although they tack on $20/day. I'd go ahead and plan to pay a bit more for a rental. |

I'm in Yorba Linda (duh!), not far from Anaheim and only about 45 miles (and three hours!) from the Castle. A get-together at the Castle sounds like fun; count me in, schedule permitting.

Yes, a car is essential. Glad to hear that some companies do rent to people who are under 25. That is your best bet. If the endless traffic jams and L.A. smog get to you after awhile, consider dropping south here to San Diego. It's about 90 minutes south of Anaheim. We aren't as bad as L.A. in terms of traffic and smog (but we're getting there!).

Hey there Brian,
Nice to hear you're coming down this way. I would enjoy meeting you guys. I always like meeting people from the Café. In fact I just met Leland Stone this past Monday at the Magic Castle. Nice guy, hopefully will see him there again. A group meet type of thing would be nice too. Anyways, I am a little south of where The Magic Castle is. I am in Torrance. Close to beaches and piers (Redondo & Hermosa) and will be happy to help with whatever I can... questions, possibly a ride here and there. Good going with the early heads up, should be able to work out a lot of details between now and when you arrive. Cya, GlenD (Mr. Glen on myspace or "magiglen")

If you haven't got your hotel yet The Candy Cane Inn is the BOMB. Hands down the best in terms of friendly, clean and reasonable. (Do your search for reviews...even in the Disney sites it is highly recommended.
Food is really not a problem as far as cost, there are excellent values if you know where to eat at Disneyland, California Adventure and Down Town Disney. Just forget the Blue Bayou which has shrunk it's menue and doubleed it's price. Inside Disneyland most menues are pretty good and the price is reasonable..Rancho Zocalo is a good mexican but the BEST is out side in Downtown Disney...there's a Mexican restaurant that has an express window...for $3.99 you get two HUGE tacos (the real deal not thos Bell kind)...in DL itself Speghetti and Meatballs is $7.99 (I think) and it's a BIG plate easily two can do it...we don't but hey we are big. There are many places that are good and not high priced...no need to leave the resort. Over in California Adventure there is Taste Pilots for great cheap Ribs (really good too) and Burgers you load your self. (Avoid McDobnalds as it is WAY overpriced. There is the excellent grab joint Award Weiners (The Itallian Sausage is especially good and cheap. You want upscale and expensive there are those too...just ask, Our favorite for a fabulous dinner is Hook's Point at the Disney Hotel...NOT really expensive and the mesquite open Grilled entrees are memorable and service is first class. They are just above a world class wine shop so do the Wine tasting at your table. It is awesome and not expensive. The expensive spots are there too but easily avoided. There is also a Rain Forest Café in Downtown Disney and Brennan's (New Orleans food) but Brennean's has shrunk it's plate size considerably. HOuse Of Blues has a Sunday Brunch with an 'Urban' Gospel show that's a kick. You'll have fun for sure. We do just about every other week.

If you really want to save money, the metro day pass only cost $3. I've taken it it to the magic castle before. The day pass includes all buses and subways. Of course you would have to plan your trip to no where you're going.

I used to live in Oxnard. Went to Disneyland and Hollywood just before leaving Calif. *sob* But I don't think I've ever seen LA itself.
