I am VERY new to magic/balloon twisting. I recently contacted the local ring about joining and/or attending a meeting. I was hoping that it would be a great opporunity to meet some magicians, and to learn from people who are experienced.

However, you have to "audition" a small routine first. How is someone who is very new to magic suppose to create a small routine when they only know a few very basic tricks? Shouldn't the organizations be trying to "recruit" new members to help create more interested in their art?

I know that the Ring I belong to did not require an "audition" of any kind, but "newbies" are required to perform an effect or two at the next April meeting, as the April meeting is always "newbie night." Now our Ring makes sure that you understand that you may perform the simplest or most complicated effect in the world; it does not matter. The idea is for true newbies to magic to get some performing experience, and of course for more experienced or pros to be able to "show off" a bit to the group.

It does seem strange that this Ring would require an audition to join. Unfortunately I do not have any answer for you. Pardon my little rant and overuse of quotes. It's late. Off to bed.

I don't know the character of your Ring, or what they expect from you, but since you are asking for advice, here's what I think that you should do.

Get two or three tricks that are dead easy. I am thinking of the real beginner stuff, like the Adams and Royal Magic line, easy rope tricks, needle through balloon, ball and vase, a penetration frame, two card monte, that kind of thing. Or go to a toy store and get a kid's magic set or a couple of kid tricks that appeal to you. Work with these until you could do them in your sleep.

Then go in there with a polished routine and sell this stuff like you were Lance Burton floating a beautiful woman in Las Vegas. You are the Master of Mystery! Let your big heart and your big smile show that you are having the time of your life up there. Perform your heart out. No apologies, no excuses, no fumbling, just pure love. If I saw someone come to our Ring (which doesn't require auditions) and do that, I'd go up and shake their hand, pat them on the back, and tell them that they had what it takes.

You could try to master some really advanced stuff, but you are never going to fool this bunch. Just dazzle them with goodwill.

Yours,

Paul
