Hey all. So, my golf coach asked me to perform at his daughters birthday in May. She is 10 years old, and there will be 6 to 8 kids there. I have never done a kids show, and in all honesty, never plan to do any (other than this). But that aside, I still want to put on a good performance.
I have a 30 minute slot to fill, and I am charging him $40 (discounted price, obviously). But anyways, heres what I am thinking of performing as of right now (in no particular order). Chop Cup with lemon as final load Spongeball routine Malini Egg Bag Professors Nightmare That's it. I am sure I could fill 30 minutes with that right there, and some nice patter. What do you think? I have not routined the whole thing yet, but I am going to break in down soon, once I get some opinions from the Café members here. Thanks for any and all advice, Steve |

Sounds like a great show! I would end with the Chop Cup. Why would you never plan on doing any other kids shows? If this one goes well, you could double the fee next time, double it again the following time, and in six months give up your day job! Plus, you would be having fun and growing rich at the same time!

For 10 year olds the tricks are fine,
but I can't see them lasting for 30 minutes. At that age, and with such a small audience I would add some card tricks, cut and restored rope, and a couple of other adult tricks that older children can follow. It's better to drop a couple of tricks if you over-run than to struggle to pad out the routines. It would not matter if it were free, but even a discounted show MUST be up to professional standards. |

I'm not sure if the whole kids entertainment scene is for me. I perform at Red Robin, and I love it. I love to perform for adults, but not so much for kids. We'll see how this show goes in May, and I'll most likely make a decision then whether I wish to market myself for bdays.
Thanks for all the advice, and it's very much appreciated. Best, Steve |

You'll do fine...good set for that age group. Toss in some coin or card work as filler.

Do you think $40 is a fair price for a half hour? And thanks for all the advice!

I bet it is more than you get for 30 minutes at Red Robin!

I get $125-$175 for a 40 minute birthday party magic performance. I think I got about $40 for my first show when I was 9.

I ask 75 or 100 per hour. But the show is good. What I like to do is quick tricks combined with longer ones. Something like this:
1. Chinese Sticks 2. Spongeball Routine 3. Quentin Reynoulds Hankerchief routine 4. Tail Spin 5. Radio Trick from miracles for mortals and then on music: 6. Cut and restored Rope 7. Multiplying balls 8. Colourchanging Silks 9. Music stops : Magic Colouring book 10. Comedy Funnel 11. Chop Cup Routine 12. Professors Nightmare 13. Changebag routine with vanishing silk(TT) and silk streamer ending after that I do some ballon modeling and I'm on about 1 hour then. If its 1.5 hour it is thanks to bigger crowd for the balloons. |
