I like to perform outside the most because I have a lot of equiptment to set up. If I'm booked with shows back to back, I can save a lot of time. I do not like carrying all my props upstairs or downstairs, making several trips back and forth in a house. One disadvantage about outside is there are several things that can distract children for example, pets, loud vehicles, bouncers, etc.

You do illusions, they all must be tough for you. It doesn't matter to me, but I do not like windy days, and if I can't do my show in a shady spot I'm liable to melt. Other than that it doesn't matter to me as long as there is a pay check at the end of the show. Al Angello

Like inside but most of the times I perform outside (South Florida) and Weather is always an issue, so that's why I have routines for outside and routines for inside.

I have learned to simply adapt to the situations as they present themselves. I perform both inside and outside every year. Part of the reason for learning to be adaptive is that my wife and I do a lot of festivals and fairs and specialize in that market a lot from April till October every year. Just from being in this market, I have really learned that one must adapt to any situation when performing outdoors. This can range from weather to bad angles to sound and being heard to what type of performing area or stage you have to deal with.
But I find that because I have learned to adapt, I can offer more solutions to my clients. There is less problems for them to deal with when they book us because I have it already taken care of. A performer must learn to adapt his or her show to deal with certain weather elements. They must also be able to handle performing in vastly different staging and sometimes with bad angles or even in the round. They must also be conscious of the fact of direct sunlight on the magic they perform as well as learning that they are now performing for family-style audiences and not just children. These are all important things to remember or take into consideration when doing outdoor events. When you are outside you really must take mother nature seriously at all times. This means having protection from the elements whether they be the sun, wind, rain etc. I always bring tarps, ponchos, speaker covers and a lot more for every show we do. It is our weather kit and it always goes with us. I can talk more about what goes into this kit later if anyone is interested. It is always near us and allows us to know exactly where things are when we need them in the event of wind or rain. My biggest thing I carry and insist on is WATER and plenty of it. You must stay hydrated and cool during the day and performance. With the adrenalin going the way it does, you burn off a lot of electrolites and can get yourself feeling lousy if you do not take the time to cool yourself off. My wife and I pack a cooler of water and ice for every festival we do. It is always near us and always on stage during a performance. Weather is the biggest factor with outdoor shows. The 2 biggest problems you will be faced with in ourdoor work is Wind and Rain. You must learn to adapt and come prepared for both. With the wind, I made sure to adapt my show so that I take out as much of the problems faced with the wind as I can. If I am using silks, I can solve the problem, by taking a black elastic band and having that stretch across my roll on table from one side to the next. This then allows me a place to place the silk and it will hold it there for when I need it without the worry of it blowing away. If I am using my quickshade awaning for my own staging, I make sure I pack the weights for it so that it is weighted down in the event of heavy wind. For rain, I bring ponchos for my wife and I as well as a small umbrella and cases and tarps that are water resistent. These are always kept in their own case and within easy access in the event rain is a problem. Hope some of this helps. Kyle

You want to know my really REALLY favorite?
I pull up to the house. It's pleasant weather. The party is set up in the empty garage, or on the front lawn. I back into the driveway. I get out of the van to greet the parents. They tell me "why don't we just do the show right here?". I open up the back of the van, set my equipment up right there, do the show and never take a single step until it's time to get back in the van and leave. Lazy - I guess so, yeah. |

Inside. Although I don't mind the garage show either. But I don't like outside at all, too much stuff can go wrong, it can be too hot or too cold, but rarely just right. So my contracts all say indoors.

Inside, inside inside!
A pack of screaming 6 year olds cut my show off after only 10 minutes a few years ago due to a swarm of BEES! No kidding. Three kids stung including the bday child. End of show, paid only 1/2 and no tip, and everyone was sent home. I have had bees, airplanes, loose dogs, wind, sudden rain, next door construction pounding, intense heat, heat thunder and more trying to steal my kid's attention away from me. Inside I have seen TV's and drunken uncles, but both were easy enough to kill before the show! |

Absolutely Inside!!!!
The wind, temperature, humidity (for the most part) is always constant. I'll perform outside if I have to, but I'll always request a show be performed inside. Derrick |

I live in the UK, which means there would only really be about 1 day a year when the whether conditions, no wind, no rain, no threat of rain, not too hot, not too cold woud be perfect, so I go indoor everytime.

I definitely prefer indoor shows because of the many distractions possible outdoors which have been mentioned above.
In fact, I charge an additional amount for outdoor performances. I figure if I'm going to sweat and put up with all the distractions, I'm going to be compensated for my troubles. Sometimes, when I mention the outdoor up-charge, clients will find an indoor alternative for the show to avoid the extra fee. Lyndel |

It is interesting to see so many folks saying indoors only. I certainly can understand it cause I was once in the exact same boat in my own way of thinking. There is nothing wrong with wanting to only do indoor shows as it certainly is easier, more comfortable for you and you can control situations a lot easier.
However, since I now specialize a lot in festival and fair shows, I have found myself probably performing outdoors a good 75% of my time. But performing outside has not been a problem for my wife and I because we have learned to adapt our show and ourselves to performing in the outdoor environment. It took us some time to adapt the show and to get used to being prepared, but now we always are and it usually is no problem for us at all. What I love is that I now have the benefit of bing able to offer complete solutions for any of my clients. I can perform inside or outside whichever works out best for them. I also find that since most magicians in my area just will not do outdoor shows, that I have much less competition for my festival and fair markets I perform at. This works just fine for me. =) Kyle

For the average house party, inside is the way to go -- for all the reasons stated above. That's why my letter of confirmation states that the party should be indoors. When I explain my reasoning to parents, they always manage to find a place inside. I even stress that this sets the show apart from the rest of the party (if outside)--making it a special treat. "The kids come into the "theater" for the show only, then they can go back outside."
And more than once a perfectly nice day has turned to rain in the middle of my show.

The most I dislike about the outside is the weather like most of you. One time I was blowing up those 260 balloons by mouth for a family reunion at a park on a hot summer day. I felt unconscious for a split second. I almost passed out from all the balloon blowing and the heat. I have felt the same feeling in the middle of two of my magic shows.
I always must perform in the shade because of my animals. I do not let direct sun light hit them. I did a show earlier today inside of a house. I had to make 6 trips going back and forth. It was a very large house. The stairway was long. I always think positive as if it was a good excersise. |

Amen Al,
It certainly is a preference thing as to what you prefer to do. However, my wife and I are like Al. There are so many more opportunities and higher paying markets for us if we are able to adapt ourselves and our show to working outdoors. We have done this and it has been a wonderful thing for us. We are now able to perform in markets where there is much less competition and still be able to produce a great magical experience. Kyle

It's not a yes or no thing usually. Experience proves to me that when the event has a possibility of being moved indoors, I can usually get them to see the benefits of it.
Like Lyndell, I charge more for outdoor events, and I happily explain to them why. For most who are coordinating the event, it is only their first time, sfter they find out how long I have been doing shows, they tend to gleam from me & anything I can tell them to make their event more of a success. Company Picnics: Many times their are indoor facilities/barns that come with the rental of the picnic area, and many companies who have tried outdoor events are no longer doing them for many reason stated above. Birthdays in a Park: Not around here. It's practically unheard of. Sadly, the parks are unkept and sometimes even considered dangerous. Pool Parties: 99% of the time there is a clubhouse right there at the pool to hold the show in. Myself, I would absolutely refuse to do a pool party AT the actual pool with wet kids slinging water everywhere and kids cannon-balling! Festivals/Parades/Etc: Just as with ANY show I undertake, I find out everything about the event. if they don't have a covered stage, and can't get one - they don't have me. I would never perform directly under the sun! That's plain stupid. Fainting, strokes, death, skin cancer, sun burn, sweat and general discomfort are just a few of the reasons! I guess I'm not one of these "will do any event, anywhere, anytime for a buck" kinda guys. I would rather give the job to Al or Kyle if it meant I would not enjoy the show myself. Besides, the sun makes me cranky! But that's what makes this world beautiful, we're all different! |

I totally can understand what you are saying magickid. It really becomes what works best for you and the way you want to run your magic business. However, I wanted to correct something you stated as I do not want folks getting the wrong idea about how my wife and I work.
I can not speak for Al, but I know Al well enough to know that what I am about to say he would probably agree with as well. You stated that you would rather give the "will do any event, anywhere, anytime for a buck" type shows to people like Al or myself. I want to correct this because this is not what I am about or how I run my magic business. My wife and I perform specific shows customized for very specific markets only. We then perform these in our performing area which is 100 miles from our home base. We also never perform a show that we feel is low money just to say we performed it. We command top dollar fees for our markets because we perform not only a show but give our clients a customized and total solution for which they come back to us for time and again. This is a very different then the performing anywhere, anytime for a buck philosophy. Now do not get me wrong, how you want to run your business and whether you want to perform indoors or out is your decision only and it is not right or wrong. Only the indvidual magician can determine what works best for him or her. However you seemed to imply that the folks like myself and Al only perform outdoors because we feel we have to and have no other choice. It is almost implied that we are performing outdoors just to make an extra quick small dollar fee. I just want to make sure I am clear that at least around the parts where my wife and I perform, the outdoor shows that we perform are very high income markets. Performing outdoors may not be for everyone, and that is perfectly fine. However there are outdoor markets that are great and high paying markets for the entertainer. You just have to know what you are getting into and like any market, you study the market and learn to adapt to it. I have been doing outdoor shows now for years and for myself and my wife, it is very easy for us to handle. Our show can be performed almost anywhere in any condition and even totally surrounded if I had to. I adapt to the weather and the sun by simply carrying a few extra things with me in what we call our weather kit. Working outdoors has been a blessing for us and we enjoy every minute of it. It allows us to work high end markets that others are simply not willing or do not want to do and to specialize in these markets. We have been able over the years to perform less shows but receive more income from these shows that we do. To us this is a win-win situation. Hope this clarifies things a bit. Thanks. Kyle

I prefer indoors simply because I don't like when the props blow around but will gladly perform in either. I hate basements unless they have an easily accesible walk-out. I rarely complain (except to my wife) and always offer the best show possible.
