I am looking at putting on a show for some kids and was wondering if you guys had any good proven tricks that kids like. I am sorry if this has been posted before but please bear with me as I am new to this site. Thanks. Damkat69

In order to answer this you need to give us a little more information such as:
What can you do? Sponge Balls, Cards, Coins, no slight of hand at all... Are you looking for good props? Like Hippety Hop Rabbits, Linking Rings etc. Or are you looking for information on routines you can learn using ropes, and so forth. With a little more information from you other magicians have a better idea of what to advise you on.

Thanks for the help. I have the magic colouring book which is great, and also just bought the hippety hop rabbits. I am more into geek magic and have a great collection, but for obvious reason cannot to these for children. I am looking for anything that you guys have used with kids that have gone over well. I do have a great slight of hand routine with coins, and so far the kids have liked scoth and soda. I also do spongeballs but for some reason they don't go over all that well. I also practice a lot so if I had to learn new tricks or routines I would welcome the challenge. Anything you can recommend would be great, as I am just starting with a Kids program and hope to have it running in 3 months so I can do about an hour long show for them.

Definetly get the trick "lollipops" at least I think that's what it's called. Anyway I have used this and it works tremendously with children. It's a trick every children's performer should have.

David Kaye's (Silly Billy) book Seriously Silly might be a good help for you. I enjoyed his lecture, bought the book and have found it to be a valuable resource.

Hello,
I found, things like multiplying balls, and simple vanishes/appearances via the Thumb Tip were the best for the younger kids. Gardini |

Damkat, you are very welcome.
Just to build on gardini - he is so right - kids love visual magic. The more visual, the better. And Kids love to laugh and have fun. A friend of mine is doing the Rocky Racoon number, it rocks. Andy

It's funny because I have done magic shows for adults and found it to be somewhat of an easy task, but starting with the kids has me more nervous than ever..I am doing a charity show for the kids and want them to have a blast, but man I feel a lot of presure putting this one together. Funny thing is I have a boy around the same age.

Kids do react very different, more spontaneous and wild, as you know by own experience. But the reward and the joy you can create will be great. Good luck

Remember one thing, in the minds of children, magic is real. Easy and colorful are things to keep in mind. Participation is also a key ingredient for success. Keep it short but sweet. You might want to check out the "Little Darlings" or "KIDabra International" forums for more info about performing for children.

Most of my shows are "kid shows". Going back to Gordyboy's post, I would highly recommend the Silly Billy book. This has done more for me that anything else in my magical journey. Jim |

Hippity Hop Rabbits and Acrobatic Silks go over well in my kids shows. Doggone is really good too.

Damkat,
Not sure of the age group you're referring to, but you might keep the following in mind; Small children have a short attention span... so, quick flashy visual effects go over well. Avoid long drawn out routines. Sucker effects are good, but avoid over-using them. A lot of sucker tricks will give them the idea that you're just playing jokes on them. Keep them laughing and having fun... try to be spontaneous... i.e., if a balloon pops in the crowd, grab your chest and look down to see if you've been shot (kids love this kind of stuff.) Keep the routine tight with very few 'dead' spots (in between effects.) Also, my experience doing kid shows, is that after 20 minutes, small kids will become very fidgety. For that reason, I always limited my 'small' kids shows to 20-30 minutes. Older kids (Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) I would do about 50-60 minute shows. The following effects have served me well as great response items: * In The News (newspaper/water... don't underestimate this economical item) * Axtell Drawing Board (by far... the best item in my arsenol) * Professor's Nightmare (rope routing) * Million Flower (spring flowers from fingertips... great if using musical opening) * Rabbit/Hat puppet * Fire Book (kids love anything that has fire) * Color Changing Wand * Change Bag (I use this with volunteer 'magician') * Break-A-Way Wand (I use this with the same volunteer 'magician') * Fountain of Silks * Knots Off (silk routine) These ideas and opinions are my own... Others may agree or disagree. Hope this helps you in some way. Keep us informed about your show. Dave

Is the pleasure it brings to others. |
