Thanks Dave, right now I am in the mist of working on a 30-45 minute routine, because the age group should be between 5-10 years of age, and if all goes well I want to continue the show every couple weeks so the kids can have some entertainment during the summer. It is taking a lot longer to put together than I thought, but I think it will be well worth it in the end. I have the luxury of having a great magic shop down the street from my house so getting new effects or props is not difficult so thanks to you and everyone else who has and continue to help me out with some great info....I will of course post how it went as soon as I get home from my first show..

What trick do you guys use to close your show. I was thinking of using the flower wallet, and having the kids put the flowers in a change bag then have some Chinese finger traps appear and give them out as souvenirs but still am not sure. I am also looking for a great opener and am thinking of a musical "silk" routine.

Damkat,
I used to close my kid show, using a Dove Pan. I didn't produce a dove... I produced popcorn. Here's a description of my routine: I say, "Well kids, I had planned to make everyone some popcorn tonight, but... I only have one kernel to pop." I hold up one popcorn kernel and throw it into the bottom of the pan. I then say, "But maybe if I use a little magic, there will be enough for everyone. First, I take this magic popping oil..." (squirt a little disguised lighter fluid into the bottom portion of the pan.) At this point, I also give a little safety lesson about the danger of playing with fire... and that only their moms and dads should try this. I then say, "Just light a match and throw it in..." Big flame... then I put the lid on... wave the magic wand... and immediately lift the lid to show a heaping pan of popcorn. At this point, my assistant comes to me with a large bowl (already half-filled) with popcorn... and I dump the pan into it. She then walks into the crowd, letting each of them reach into the bowl and grab a handful. This allows me time to throw my magic/props into my magic trunk and lock it up, preparing to leave. If you work without an assistant, you could just as easily dump the pan and carry the bowl to the kids yourself... but be forewarned... prepare to be mobbed and stampeeded. If you survive, you'll be the hero of the day. Hope this idea helps. Dave
One good thing about being wrong...
Is the pleasure it brings to others. |

I have been slowly building my kids magic show, so far I have a bunch of silks including several colour changes, flower wallet, super frog, several rope tricks including a colour changing one, dlite, and a hollow thumb for some easy vanishes. I also have the magic colouring book, a change bag, scotch and soda, and soon will have the candy factory and a dove pan, and a rabbit and hat. These are all based on knowledge that you guys have given me and my local magic shop. Thanks for all your help, somehow I need to put it all together and see what I still need. I was wondering what you guys thought about perhaps swalling a balloon??? My wife says I should not do it because kids believe you really are doing it, but I think I could change it into more of a comedy routine. What is your opinion??

If the show you're doing is kindof close up/close stage magic then perform Recap by Greg Wilson. Maybe this doesn't seem like the best trick for kids. But I've performed it thousands of times for kids at their birthday parties and they love it. LOVE IT. I play the village idiot for this trick, I admit. But they love it more than any other trick. But if you're enthusiastic and an energetic performer I defintely recommend recap.
I want to go far...

Fraser, can you explain what recap is, I have not heard of that effect. I looked it up and only found the DVD it is on, but would love an explanation before I decide if I should purchase it.
Thanks.. |

Recap is series of vanishes and reappearances of a bic-like pen and its cap (hence re-cap). It happens in your hands, and right under the noses of the spectators.
The original can be found in Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment Vol 1 ReCap Revisited has an improved ending and is found on Greg Wilson's On the Spot

I would look into trick types. David Ginn classifies kid tricks, such as sucker tricks (PB and J, Hippity Hop, etc.), how many helpers, whether trick is good opener or closer (or warm-up), running gags, etc. He does a great job laying out classifications of tricks, and Silly Billy is very good at distinguishing approaches by age appropriateness. That said, I go for colorful silks, classics like coloring book, silly stuff with "magician in trouble" themes (popping and break-away wands, Kandu's comedy carton), and a splashy livestock production finale for my rabbit Mocha (but puppets or spring animals - check out Rocky the Raccoon - might be just as effective). Also, the bubble gum mouth coils as a "gum pulling contest" goes over wonderfully and is cheap and easy.
I would be careful of giving out candy, using peanut butter (or even alluding to it), and fire tricks (lots of paranoid parents and teachers out there). I haven't been doing this all that long, frankly, but have done a lot of research and some performing, finding Ginn, Silly Billy, and Sammy Smith books, and silk routines from Barry Mitchell and Tim Sonnefelt to be great ways of starting (Mitchell posts some of his routines gratis on his website). And there are some great posters on "Little Darlings," and one Magic Café veteran performer who I bought a prop from has even sort of "taken me under his wings" to help advise and teach the way the brick and mortar dealers used to (but no longer do, alas). The Café, attending a magicians' group chapter (SAM), some attendance at other magicians' shows and practice before my daughters and other young audiences seems to be helping me quite a bit. |

Thanks, I have been ever increasing my Kids magic knowledge and preformed a small show only days ago to get a feel for what I can do well and what needs some work. I have used a lot of knowledge from the poeple who have posted here and continue to learn with the help of some great people(the Café members).

I close my show with Gene Anderson's Classic, Torn and Restored Newspaper. As I finish the trick I throw confetti for a nice ending.
"There's no limit to what one man can accomplish, as long as he's willing to let someone else have the credit." (These words were inscribed on a small brass plaque which sat on President Ronald Reagan's desk in the White House during his second term.)

I would not use D'lite for kids around 10 years old, because they have it from ebay or a friend that has one. If the party is for 4th or 5th graders look on ebay at the magic trick to see what they have at home.
I use d'lite on halloween in front of my house. The small children and adults love the trick. Every year I have kids tell me how I'm doing it, I just say great now we have a secret from your friends don't tell them. I have used the other tricks and they work great for kids.
