In Tokyo Trickery by Takeshi Nemoto he states: "A lengthy illustrated cups and balls effect appeared in an early Japanese magical publication called 'Hokasen' which was issued in 1764". I have searched and searched and can't find much info on this publication. Does anyone have any information on this book?.

Hmmm............ actually from some info over at the GENII forum it looks like Steve Cohen has translated this book so I will contact him. Sorry for the post!

Thanks, Todd

If you have Takeshi Nemoto's book, you should try to contact him directly. He is a very nice man. He does like to talk to serious students of magic.

I'm not sure exactly how to find him, but he might be in the Magic Yellow Pages.

Thanks bill. I will try and track down a copy of the Magic Yellow Pages (or maybe someone can look him up for me?). He could probably point me to some other Japanese books covering cups and balls.

It never fails to amaze me how the Café helps out. Fantastic.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

It is amazing.

Well Mr. Cohen wrote me back but he pointed me to Bill Kalush over at the Conjuring Arts Research Center. Mr. Cohen has a copy of Hokasen, but he says it is written in Kanbun, which is a type of classical Chinese written for a Japanese audience. Apparently it is very hard to translate. So, I will try and track Mr. Kalush down and ask him for more info. Also waiting to hear back from Mr. Nemoto.

I am starting to feel more like a detective these days Smile But, it is a labor of love.

I have the pages from this book pertaining to the Linking Rings. This is one of the rarest of the rare books. The man that had the copy I looked at has passed away and he was kind enought to let me make high res copies of the pages I wanted. This, as far as I know, was the FIRST EVER published routine with the linking rings.

This month's issue of Genii Magazine (may 2016) has some of the Hokasen description of the cups trick. Enjoy Smile
