My daughter is learning sponge balls. I was wondering if anyone does a two man sponge ball routine, with balls vanishing from the hand of one person to appear in the other persons hands and so forth.
Are there any books or DVDs that have something like this for us to learn from? I will be working on a routine that will use her current skills, but would like some reference on some nice routines we could work toward.

Nice idea! I had thoughts of a two person Cups and Balls with my stepson. (until he reached his teens and got interested in other things) I don't know of any references for such a routine though, sorry. I'd just expand on the "hand to hand" stuff as you're saying, just substituting a "vanish" for one person and "reappearance" for the other. You may have to watch out for "Spectator's Logic" for lack of a better term. It won't take them much to deduce what's going on unless you get really creative.
(BTW, I used to carve Habu sticks in Scout camp in Japan, to keep the Habus away. They must have worked, I never saw one. Now at least I know what Habus are!)

My thoughts were effects that looked like I hand the ball to her, then she does a vanish and I have it again, or she takes a ball and drops it in a box, the box is shown empty and I pull it out of my mouth, or she pulls balls from the air and tosses them to me (invisibly) and they keep showing up in my hand as she produces and vanishes them.
You are right though that it does open up our routine to skeptics so we would have to be sure we showed a vanish and appearance very cleanly.

Penn and Teller did a two person Cups and Balls - unfortunately they end it up with disclosure of the effect which is a crying shame. However, up to the disclosure part, they cooperated nicely. I am sure the clip is somewhere on Youtube.

Rick, I like this idea, a lot!
I think if you were to approach it from a magician's perspective, it would fall flat. However, if you approached it from a choreographer's point of view, I think you'd be on to something marvelous! I did a similar thing with an assistant years ago using cigarettes. It wasn't the strength of the magic that made it work. A few moments of deduction could logically piece it together. It was the "dance" that the cigarettes did through our hands, the unexpected twists, and the artistry of tying it all into a nice piece of music. Even smoke transferred from one person to the other magically! Try to locate a videoed performance of someone doing fast paced manipulation with jumbo coins, for instance, and you'll get the idea quickly. Gary Kurtz comes to mind, but there should be others. You will have all the advantages in place to do things that are much more difficult to do as a solo performer. Imagine a quick scenario... One ball in your hand vanishes and reappears in a quick series of blended vanishes and reproductions. She is right next to you intently watching, as you are supposedly performing for her. Suddenly the ball that vanishes from your hand appears in her hand. You take it back and split it into two. Give her one. Yours vanishes and reappears in your pocket. It vanishes again and pops up in her hand with the other. ....similar continued action... third ball vanishes and we expect it to pop up with the other two she has. It does not. We are a bit let down, and the ball suddenly pops up from her other hand. ....similar continued action... up and until everyone is expecting a fourth ball to travel to her, hers suddenly vanish and all four reappear back in your hand! At any point in the routine she could duplicate your actions exactly with different results. Could be fun to watch and funny, too. The clandestine action is all basic sponge stuff. Steals would be a piece of cake. Lots of good attention command to work from. ~michael

Thanks Michael, that's food for thought. I hadn't considered it as being a me-showing-her routine but I really like that idea, especially with her being surprised when things begin to appear in her hands or pockets.
It could be quite comical if she can pull off the facial expressions.

Rick,
I can see now that you are going to fit in well in Ring 35. Magic is a performance intended to entertain the audience. It is an act that simply employs magic in the process. (You're going to see why I love to work with Michael Baker!) I look forward to what you develop here. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
