Thanks again everyone. Now that the euphoria is wearing off a bit, I'm starting to analyze bit by bit in more detail.
Also, now that I've actually demonstrated that I can do this and gone out and done it for real and for real money. I have a new level of commitment from both myself and my wife. She was always committed, but wary of the growing pile of magic that she feared might never be put to use. This means I'll be able to reinvest in some improvements like a small table, better "safari" clothes, a pith helmet, etc. Coins with my logo on them, (and getting my logo designed by a pro here on the Café). One thing that came up during the show was that all the children had a wand, but "we don't have hats!" I'm thinking about inexpensive plastic safari hats similar to the fireman helmets we used to get in school during fire safety week. (Anyone know a source??) The cheap hats would be a better solution for a larger group as well I think. I only had one minor sword fight with the wands that I stopped real quick. However, in a crowd of 20, that might have been different. I might even be able to put my logo on the hats with static stickers or some such. My table isn't good for this close, intimate show. It's just a folding table about 20x30 like you get at Home Depot or Lowes. The surface is good, but the legs do not adjust to a great enough range. I almost just took the legs off and put the top on the floor, but at the time it would have interrupted the flow too much. So I just did away with it by putting it behind me. I'll look for an option to either make new legs, or a low stand for it that I can use when needed. Prop management. As much as I preach "train like you fight" to my students, you would think I wouldn't have missed this one. Basically, during the show, all my props were in different locations than where they were during rehearsals. It wasn't horrible, but it was an unnecessary distraction that could have been easily avoided. Shame on me! There are a few other things that were not perfect, but then sometimes perfect is the enemy of good enough. I can't wait for my next show, but for now I'm off to reward myself with a completely non-magic related toy for my camera so I can take some more of these: http://www.pbase.com/jimpoor/wood_ducks Thanks again for all the answers, support, ideas, etc that so many of you have given so freely. Best, Jim Posted: Mar 18, 2007 11:06am Ah, here is one source for the hats: http://www.kidsfoods.com/safari.html anyone know of others? Thanks Jim |

Well done Jim, welcome to heavan and hell. I like how honest kids can be. You never get that with adults, they will politely watch rubbish all the time. I'd love to see Fism judged by kids.....well just once.

Jim,
Congrats on the great show! As Kyle mentioned, evaluating your show afterwards is a very, very valuable step in the process. After each show, I recommend writing down what went good, what went bad, and what you learned or what you will change. Then make sure and follow through with those improvements. If you'll always do this, after every show, no matter how small it may seem, you'll improve with each show and refine your routines, until you've got a highly polished act! Keep up the good work! -Kevin |

Congrats to Mr Poor. That first paid gig is a big step. It sounds like the audience loved you. Be sure to thank them with a short note. Did you ask them if they enjoyed everything (did I miss this part)?
Also GOOD LUCK Michiel. Joe |

Jim,
It will be a real pleasure working with you on your logo and branding design for your magic business. I really look forward to it. The hardest part of getting started in magic or doing the shows is simply one word "ACTION". Yopu have to be able to take action upon yourself to seek the success you want. Success does not get handed to you. You have to go out there and take action and obtain it yourself. You have obviously done that and the hardest part is over. Now you can evaluate your show and then take what you learned and apply it to the next performance. For hats I would try places like US Toy Company or Rhode Island Novelty. Some place like that online may carry that exact type of thing that you might want to use to add more value to your show and increased value in the mind of the client. You can easily get stickers made from you final logo design and use them for the hats etc. It helps carry over the brand. As for your table, you may want to eventually invest in a suitcase roll on table. I prefer the Lefler table myself as it is great for any type of show and it also allows me to crate signs with my logo on it and then just vecor it to the front of te table. Now I have a great table and anyone taking pics or video taping the show will have my logo on it. That continues to market me long after I have left the event. The Lefer table also packs dowwn very easily and carry my full kid's show easily. Something to look into. I really admire your hard work and know that you have the right attitude. It will be a pleasure working with you on your logo design project and helping you in any other way that I can. My pleasure. Kyle

Jim,
Way to go!! Just curious, how did you book the show? Word of mouth, newspaper ad, other advertisment? Do you have other bookings? I am about to start my own birthday party show and am just curious to see how you booked your first show. Thank you, Justin |

Having the knowledge that you are not going to die is actually very important.
You also proved why scripting and rehearsal is so important. You can throw everything away and still do a great show. |

Jim,
Congratulations on your first show! Do you know Jason Harris? He does a safari themed show in N. Virginia? He goes by the name Jungle Jason. It might casuse you some problems since he is quite well established in the area. Best, James |

Oh, there is room for plenty of performers in this area.
Zucchini mainly targets the pre-school market, but there are lots of other performers keeping busy. You should go to an IBM Ring 50 meeting in Alexandria. They meet the first Wednesday of the month. I think next week is the annual auction so you might even pick up a few bargains! If you really want to start performing on a regular basis, it is good to meet some of the other local magicians. You'll find everyone is very friendly and supportive. Best, James |
