This did not start from Cambridge, but there was an interesting article from a professor there about this. It is a bit more complicated than just have the first and last letters in place. It helps if the letters are in the right half of the word and ascenders and descenders need to be in about the right place.

As a dyslexic this is how I see most words so it's actually quite easy for me to read.
