What type of mentalism are you looking for?
If you are looking for well constructed routines ready for performance that you could add directly to your repertoire, any and all of Larry Becker's works would fit that requirement. These are available at most magic shops. PARAMIRICLES by Ted Leslie is a fantastic work, but is hard to find. You would have to search for it. Well thought out routines and the performance of mentalism can be found in the MENTALISM INCORPORATED books by Chuck Hickok. These can be found in most magic shops and are available from the author (also a member here). MIND MYTH AND MAGIC is a master’s course in mentalism, but requires you to create your own presentations for the pieces. It is a wonderful book of ideas and concepts, but not ideal for the person just entering into the field. It can be found at most magic shops as well. 13 STEPS by Corinda is a course in mentalism full of effects and concepts as well as the “how’s” and “why’s” of performance. The material is a bit dated and would require reframing. Additionally PRACTICAL MENTAL MAGIC by Annemann is a classic text of effects taken from the JINX. This material is also dated, but the ideas and concepts are timeless. This is just a basic beginning of a list that could contain hundreds of books. Some are better than others, some general as far as material, others more specialized. I also suggest the Richard Osterlind’s DVD series put out by L&L and Richard’s companion notes, Banachek’s DVD series, and Mark Spillman’s series. Information on these can be found with a search here on the café. Tony |

Tony, which Osterlind DVDs are you talking about? He did put out at least two series that I know of.
I already have Banachek's PSI series and Osterlind's Easy to Master Mental Miracles as well as 13 Steps to Mentalism and Practical Mental Magic. Fulves has a self-working book on mentalism as well. Hope that helps.

I still think that _Mind, Myth & Magick_ is hands down the best mentalism book ever written. Please note that I say this even though I don't perform a single effect from it, or even do anything vaguely close to the items Waters describes. No, it's his wonderful observations on the connection of what mentalists do with what the participants think we do that makes it for me. I also appreciate that he took time to write quite a bit on what makes rotten mentalism. If ever there was a case of the dog that did nothing in the night, it's this book.
If the criterion here is "most useful book for learning mentalism" as opposed to "most useful book on mentalism" then I would put Henning Nelms' _Magic and Showmanship_ immediately before Waters. Both of my copies are in tatters now and filled with more annotations, comments and cross-references than the original texts! |

I also like Stunners Plus by Larry Becker. A ton of material in there. Barrie Richardson's ACT books are also full of great stuff.

The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassiday has to be a front runner, putting any issues with Bob aside.

I know I've said this a million times, but I can't stress it enough for someone starting out in mentalism: Banachek's "Psychological Subtleties" (THE FIRST BOOK) contains not only BRILLIANT insights on mentalism, human psychology, common behavioral patterns and, of course, knockout effects... it also literally changed my life- how I deal with career, relationships and all the stuff life throws at you on an everyday basis. It is truly a revelation, a wonder. A must-have.

Bob Cassidy compiled the "39 steps to mentalism", a list of important books on this craft. You can find the list on his site.
