Of those of you who use the Wolf/Atsma's Chicken Sword (which is great by the way,) what types of loads do you use in the launcher? I know Chance suggests feathers, what else do you use? I recall an earlier thread where someone suggested a plastic egg with parachute. Other ideas?
Thanks! Dan. |

I've used the long, stiff feathers...I've also used a blown egg (crushes when it hits the stage) loaded with some glitter. Either works, but the "pin feathers" (readily available at Wal-Mart stores) seem to be better. They make better sense than something like confetti would.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! An egg gets launched out with a parachute? That's a brilliant idea. Does anyone do this? If so, do tell!!! Does it work well? What type of egg are you using?
I've made what Chance suggestions. It's a cork with varying shades of brown and white feathers glued to it. I put that in then I really load up the rest of the loader with as many feathers as I can get in. It really gives me an amazing shower of feathers. --Jon |

I do something similar to Jon/Chance's suggestion and that's using a small styrofoam ball with feathers glued to it and then the extra feathers attached...the parachute idea sounds brilliant and is definitely something one should test out and report back to us...I'm thinking bout buying one of those kids toys that have parachutes already made...remove it and attach it to a hollow plastic egg and wouldn't that be cool if you could get a nice slow descent for all to watch...that would be a very very funny visual.

I use feathers, a few playing cards, and a styrofoam egg I bought at AC Moore.
Some of the feathers are glued to a small cork and I also put some on top loose. |

Hi guys
it was I who suggested to Chance that he try and make an egg parachute - this idea came from seeing an advert for popping the cork off a champagne bottle with a parachute attached to the cork. I've yet to try it out - but it would be great to see it in action or hear from someone who has managed to knock one up. RE - what I put in the launcher - at the moment I'm not using it - for me it didn't quite make sense - maybe I'll look into it... |

Hmmmm....."knock one up" in reference to an egg....there's a really good joke in there somewhere...

I'm assuming by pin feathers you are talking small feathers without a thick shaft. I saw some smaller feathers but they came in flourescent pink, orange, blue and other colors not found on a chicken. I didn't think the larger shafted ones these places carried in natural colors would be good to be shooting out at my eyes. Does anyone have a source for feathers? I had found one place online but they want $15 in just shipping for even a 1/4 pound of feathers.

Where there are pigenos there are feathers and poop ... If I see you all at the park scaring geese this Memorial Day weekend, I'll know it was a Chance encounter!
$15 is ridiculous. Anyone got a dove we could pluck? |

Someone did raise a point about the reason for the feathers being hard to routine. Anyone want to share how they made those part of the story? Or is this just an effect you have to "feel" rather than script? I just got my chicken sword, and am finding it a challenge to write a routine for . . . The effect is great, but I haven't found a convincing patter for it. Anyone got one they're willing to share, even in broad outline?

You might start with Arthur's basic routine and then go from there. I sometimes use alphabet cards and voila my chicken is learning to read which is great for a school or library show. There simply is no shortage to the number of ideas that one could come up with for this. I would ham up the classic of magic presentation wich I believe is what Arthur does on the video..."Ladies and gentlemen I shall now perform a classic of magic which is on par with sawing a rabbit in half or producing a woman from a hat. I The Great Smartini will now present for you the amazing deck of cards and chicken bucket illusion."

I just found some sponge eggs that fit well (Goshmans)? You still have to have the heavier load (cork with feathers) underneath, but you can also pop a few eggs if you want to mix them in the mix . . .

I've been using a sponge egg. I've had success with the line "What does a rubber chicken lay?" Then the rubber egg comes flying out as the kids yell "A rubber egg."
OK, I just read this and that line sounds really lame here. Try it - I've been able to make it work. |

Has anyone tried the latex eggs like the Kreis Magic Perfect Egg? Do they expand fast enough as they are launching out?

I really like the feathers flying out, but have had trouble as they are too light on their own, and only a few actually leave the bucket.
I use the line "Hmm, seems like this chicken may be a little undercooked." One other thing to add to this thread....I was really having fun using Arthur's 'hypnotizing the chicken' idea, and took it one step further. Unable to revive the hypnotized chicken, I start to panic, and resort to pulling out my book "Complete Idiots Guide To Hypnosis," which is available in the "Idiot's Guide" series, and available quite cheap. The younger kids don't quite get it, but it gets lots of laughs from everyone else, as I read, and follow the directions on reviving your hypnosis subject (I've written some funny directions, which are taped into the middle of the book (short cut the page for quick access). Can't tell you how great the reaction has been to this addition to an already highlight routine! |
