I have no memory of seeing a magician for real when I was a child. I remember very clearly that I saw several on tv, but not "live".
It would be interesting to hear how many share the same experience? Mikael |

As a child I had the pleasure of seeing the wonderful Tommy Cooper. I can't remember much - I must have been under 10 but do remember laughing so hard. He opened with his trademark variety stage 'I can't find the stage' routine which had the place in stitches before he hit the lights.

The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are

Well, im still a kid (14) but When I was real little, I remember 3 cub scout meetings that had a magician-One time there was 2 old people with a head chopper (lol), a guy that all i remember him doing was hippity hop rabbits, and i remember this lst guy with an effect i have never heard of-He had 2 rose stems one with a rose on it and one without....he closed his eyes and the kids had to tell where the rose was (on which stem) and it kept switching sides which got a lot of audience participation! Josh
If a magician is not intending to "trick" a spectator, why is every "trick" called a magic "trick"?

My childhood was the 50s and mid 60s. Magician? NEVER! no TV till 1958! No car till 1963! Britain was devastated by the poverty caused by fighting WW2 (and the money we owed to our Uncle Sam). The popular TV magician of the day (for those who had a TV) was David Nixon. I went to a Catholic school. For a treat they used to show us a faded film of the life of St. Bernadette and then throw holy water over us!! A magician would have been a visit from Satan.

Like Tony, one of the first magicians I saw was David Nixon on TV. I never saw a live magician as a child. I never had a party like they do these days. The best I would get would be maybe 2 or 3 friends around for tea. We wouldn't play games or anything, just tea.
All the best, Billy |

I was so upset that I wasn't picked to help the magician on stage when I was in elementary school, I was scared for life! I became a magician and that man was the reason. I don't know who he was, but I still can see him in my mind's eye pulling a rabbit out of a hat, hypnotising it so it laid on it's back, then suspended it. Snaped his fingers and it awoke. He really WOWed me big time.
He was dressed as a classic magican had a black backdrop, and colorful props all over the stage. He did the Miser's Dream also. I needed money and I HAD to become a magician so I could get money that way. Boy, was I living in a fantasy world back then. What an impression he left on me!

I can still remember seeing Chris Carey (author of "Do the stuff that's you") at my school way back in the early '70s in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. His "Warm Fuzzies" spongeball routine must have impressed me, because it's all I remember, along with the music he used.

David Nixon on TV was the limit of my magical experiences as a child. Then of course it was Paul Daniels.

I only saw a magician perform once while growing up. He performed at my church in 1979 - maybe 1980. His name was Steven Steele and he is a member here at the Magic Café. I remember several of the routines he performed but I was totally amazed by the Linking Rings. Soon after I asked for, and received the Chinese Magic Set put out by Adams. Looking back, it had pretty good quality for being a kid's set. And it had a set of linking rings .

I grew up on a farm in a small town in Illinois...the only magicians I saw where on T.V. (The Ed Sullivan Show and The Amazing Land of Alakazam).
One experience I do remember was the one that got me interested in magic. Our fourth grade teacher became very ill and her substitute used magic to motivate us to study. She used simple items such as the coin slide box and the ball and vase, but I was fascinated and hooked! I don't remember her name, but I will never forget her magic. Andrew |

The first magician I can remember seeing was at a local department store in my home town. I have no idea why he was there, such as a promotion or as a way to entertian the kids while Mom shopped. But I do remember he performed the Spot Card, (where the dots go from 1-4-3-6 and finally 8). After the show, while he was packing up or getting his check, I wandered up to the stage and picked up the card, which was right at the front of the stage, and discovered how the trick was done. It taught me to get my props out of the way of curious hands first, THEN collect my fee.

I remember the first magician I saw...but I cant remember the name. They got me up on stage when i was 4 and did the trick where they did the trick where you tuck the silks in your pants and it pulls out the underwear...ya...I was scared for life and humiliated as I was laughed at. Not a good first experience, yet I decided to pursue magic continously, just because magicians here were and still are a rarity.

The first magician I saw live was Larry Shean who worked for Al Flosso in his shop on Saturdays. I remember being totally baffled by the Professor's Nightmare and the Genii Tube. Larry, who lived in the next town, took me under his wing and I will always remember his kindness.

I remember seeing a Magician at a Party when i was probably 5yo. Then a couple of years ago we were working at the same venue and i managed to see his show - it really hadnt changed a great deal at all, his words were "if it aint broke, don't fix it".
He's been working the Coventry area of the UK for the last 25 - 30 years and is proud of the fact - even though the act hasn't changed one bit, not even for repeat bookings. His fee for an hour believe it or not is £50. I realise that this posting has been some what off topic (ish). I only once had an entertainer at one of my own Birthday Parties and that was when i was six. He became a great family friend. He didn't perfrom magic at the party, but Punch & Judy - another of my own great loves. |

New to the board, had to respond to this topic. Was very luck to attend Magic Camp back in the early 70's. My counselor was Vito Lupo, also got to see Frank Garcia, Bob Dorian, Slydini, Tony Spina and many others. Still have the photos I took of them also. Used to go to a magic store, around the same time, called "Doug Kellers House of Magic" there I got to meet many local magicians. Was a great learning experiance for me.

I can remember seeing Mark Wilson when I was younger, then Doug Henning, David Copperfield and the unforgetable TV show, "The Magician" starring the late Bill Bixby.

I was 5 and it was Thompson elementry school in San bernardino CA.
We were treated to the linking rings, ricebowls, dove pan to cake, a realy good two dove production from a bag, a bunny box, the tricky turvy bottles, egg bag, square circle, candle thru arm,Fantasio candles and cane. Looked like the Mak catalog threw up in our gym. The guy doing the show was a real sweethart and an excellent showman. Can't remember his face anymore. Oh no...I have all this junk except the dove production....
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.
