Hi folks,
I started magic as a hobby as a boy to distract the other kids from my disability. It worked really well. Instead of being known as “the kid in the wheelchair” I became the “ kid who could pull a hamster out of his cap”. (The gimmicked cap was a gift from a magician at the local Elks Lodge.) Well, after a 30 year hiatus from magic I’m back. I’m currently looking for info about some close-up tricks that can be done one handed since my left hand is slightly paralyzed. I’m already acquainted with the old TT and can do quite a few things with it. Also, I’ve discovered the joy of floating bills and such using IT. My question is this: I’m looking for self-working packet-tricks as I’m not so good with a deck of cards one handed. So I really need them self-working. In doing research before buying, I’ve found that some “self-working” tricks really require some slight of hand I can’t do at the moment. (I’m working on one handed cuts and shuffles, so give me time.) Forgive me but I’ve used some ”reveal magic in video sites” to do the research. Without revealing secrets, could you good folks tell me if B-Wave, also known, as Choose Your Queen is truly self-working? Also, can Bye-George be done one handed? I’m also planning on Christian themed routines and looking for self-working tricks featuring the king of hearts. Any and all suggestions are extremely appreciated. Thanks.

Rene Lavand is a famous one handed magician who does wonderful magic.
I suggest that you do both a Café and Google search and review some of his material. There's also some info of him here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=2 There's also some links to videos here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=2 It's good to hear that you are working on one handed sleights because there are quite a lot of things you will still be able to do with one hand. Here's a card trick I posted a couple of years ago: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=37 There are also a couple of folks in your situation here at the Café. Hopefully they will find this topic. Luck to ya, |

Is it possible to hold a packet of cards in your left hand? If you can hold a packet in mechanic's grip (Or dealer's grip, I'm not sure which one) You can probably do Color Monte, which is a great packet trick and there are sleights, but all are done in the right hand. You just need to hold the cards in your left. The sleights aren't difficult and I could do the trick with 15-20 minutes of practice, even though more practice would DEFINITELY help.

Hearttau welcome to the magic Café, I haven't been here long myself but know that you will find the best advise here and that you no longer need to visit 'reveal sites' I for one will be contributing to your thread.
All the best Jason. |

I have nerve damage in both hands due to diabetes, and I specialize in self-working tricks. I hope you have all of Karl Fulves' books. They are tremendous.
I look for opportunities to make the spectator do the work. Not only does that keep me from dropping the cards (or other props), it actually increases the astonishment at the 'magic moment' because the spectators know I've never touched them (even when, sometimes, I actually have just for a moment).

Jaz,
Thanks so much for telling me about Rene Lavand. I’m currently bidding on “Magic From The Soul” which contains all of his routines! Hopefully the bidding won’t equal the usual asking price, which is between $45 to $54 that I’ve seen online. No one is currently bidding against me so I should get a good deal. Nice artwork by the way. David, Yes, I can hold a deck in my left overhand with my fingers curled underneath. I can deal from the top or bottom of the deck fine but it’s basically a vice grip. If I move my fingers too much my hand will spasm and I have to play 52 pick-up. It could be a great distraction for a right handed slight however! Airship, It’s nice to know you’re doing what I have mind. Is Karl Fulves disabled as well or are his illusions just “auto-magical” so to speak? Thanks again to you all! Posted: Mar 21, 2007 12:34pm Hey folks, I just finished watching a few clips from Rene Lavand's DVD's. Just wonderful! I am inspired already. The book can't come soon enough!

To my knowledge, Fulves isn't disabled. But he has published an excellent line of self-working magic books. Best of all, they're cheap!

Hi Hearttau...hope you are enjoying your magic.
I use the Charlier Pass to demonstrate a one-handed "spirit in the room" effect. Or alternatively, demonstrate a flourish. However the mood takes me. PM me and I will share the routine - which is easy-peasy. regards, wulfiesmith |

Wulfiesmith,
Thanks. My Charlier Pass stinks but I'm sure your routine will inspire me. So far, I do a fair Oil and Water, Lavand's "Can't Do It Any Slower", of course. I'm also working on a one handed matrix, thanks to Vinny Martini. But I love Lavand's "Three Bread Crumbs". I actually do it well. All the best...

Ross,
Sorry, you're too late. It's mine! ALL MINE! On second thought, if you really want it...bidding starts at $1000.00. Ditto on the kidding.

There are several decks to consider. Premonition comes to mind, but there are many others. Also you might want to consider various mentalism effects that may involve a special deck st**k. In other words, with the right setup in advance, there are many effects that can be done mostly in the spectators hands. You may consider mnemonica (or another system). Osterlind has some interesting solutions. There are also a wide array of other gimmicks that can facilitate effects of this type.
I also think there are a variety of forces you could learn. Then you could have interesting prearranged revelations, etc. There are ways you can even borrow a deck and do miracles. You could use a c**mp or a s**rt card to great use, etc. Best of luck! Steve

Thanks Steve,
Some of Lavand’s effects do require use of a c**mp or s**rt card. Since he is writing for other magician’s, he doesn’t mention his method for preparing these cards. Would using a card from a stripper deck be as detectable in a normal deck as a c**mp or s**rt card? I’ve considered using a stripper deck exclusively, but I like the idea of barrowing decks when I can.

Hearttau,
A great self-working trick that I have had lots of success with over the years is Untouched (I know it can be found in Magic for Dummies under that name. I know it is also in The Card Magic if Nick Trost under a different name, but I can't remember what. I suggest you check out Magic for Dummies from your local library and look for the trick. It's also on Michael Ammar's Easy-to-Master Card Miracles series... volume 4, 5, or 6, I believe). Untouched is very easy and could be done if you either hold the cards lightly in your left hand, or if you have a table just to demonstrate what you want the spectator to do. Actually you don't even have to touch the cards at all (hence the name of the trick) if you give good instructions. I can't emphasize enough, how strong this trick is. Best of all, it requires NO preparation whatsoever and can be done with an incomplete pack (as is obviously sometimes the case with borrowed decks). Track it down and enjoy! If I think of others, I'll let you know. Brett |

Hi Brett,
The Lazy Man's Card Trick might be what you’re referring to. The spectator cuts the deck and picks a card, you tell them to place that card on the opposite pile and cut the deck all they like. You then predict how many cards down their card is in the deck. I believe the great Harry Loraine came up with that one. There is a little prep involved, so you may be referring to another trick altogether. Thanks for the tip though, I appreciate it!

Hearttau,
Though Lazy Man's Card Trick is indeed a great effect, it isn't the one I'm referring to. You are right, though. I've done that trick before and it seems to be the one many remember and ask me to do again. The trick I'm talking about is called "Untouched" and it doesn't involve any preparation or setup as Lazy Man's Card Trick does. If you find Untouched, try it out and I promise you won't be disappointed! I wish you the best of luck with all your magic. It's a wonderful artform, isn't it? At the very least it's one of the healthier forms of distraction/self-medication! Brett |

Thanks Brett,
I'll have to "browse" the Dummy section the next time I'm at the book store. All the best, David

You're welcome!
Nothing like "browsing" in a good magic book! It's one of my favorite things to do at a bookstore. Brett |

My goodness! You're truly an inspiration!
I've seen Rene Lavand's videos and I can say that people with 3 hands can't do things half as good as he does! Amazing. Also, as I was reading this thread, one trick came to my mind. The 10 Card Poker Deal. I've seen that recently popularised by Luke Jermay. I believe it's a simple trick that can be stunnig if the patter and audience management is right. Give it a try! |
