Hi, All.
Can anyone post a list of some truly great (classic) antique magic books? I'm looking for titles & authors that were published before 1930. Professor Hoffman's Modern Magic is one, obviously... but I really need a good list of titles. The more the merrier! Thanks! - Jim

Try doing a search on here for the Jay Marshall collection. There's a bunch there. Not to mention a ton and a half on the net.

Jim,
Quite a few and very hard to remember. I could start the list with, The Old & the New Magic by Henry Ridgely Evans. I recently purchased a book titled The Magicians own Book by W.H. Cremer copyright 1894. You know this is a hard question while I am at work and my books are home, will have to check later. Hopefully someone will continue this.. If Bill Palmer sees this I know he can add to it. Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

Jim:
What's the purpose behind your question? Do you want to collect such titles? Are you limiting your question to English-language books? Just curious? If you did a search with the word "classic" and "modern magic" you might find a discussion here. Our literature contains many discussions of the classics, but I don't know of any that focus on classic works published before 1930 per se. For starters, in the English language, there is Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584), Sa. Rid's Art of Jugling (1612), the anonymous Hocus Pocus Junior (1634), Ady's A Candle in the Dark (1655), Dean's Whole Art of Legerdemain (1722), etc. Clay |

I'd say the learned pig as other have said.. or try 'ask axelandra' (http://askalexander.org/) which is another great source of old publications from the Conjuring Arts Research center |

Discoverie of Witchcraft by Reginald Scott is pretty old, I think, but first editions are hard to find.

As Michael pointed out, Learned Pig is incredible. I was also impressed with the number of full-text vintage magic books available online through Google Books.
But if you're interested in getting your hands on actual hard copies, it's off to the used bookstore/estate sale/flea market with ya.
