Hi there,

I can juggle three balls pretty well with some good tricks, and I am ok with 4 balls. What tricks should I learn now, and where can I learn them?

I can also juggle 3 rings and 3 clubs, but I don't know many tricks. I recently bought Charlie Dancey's Compendium of Club Juggling, and I am overwhelmed by its content. What should I learn first? I don't have anyone in my area to juggle with, so I can't do the passing stuff.

I have also just picked up my diablo again and I can spin and catch that pretty well, but where do I go now?

I really just want to progress with my juggling skills, but I feel like I'm at a bit of a peak that needs to be broken through.

Please help!!!

Many thanks

It doesn't matter how much natural talent God has given you. You will not reach your full potential until you are exposed to other serious jugglers. Find a club, or regional convention near you then you can combine what you already know with what you never thought of.

In 1987 I attended my first juggling convention, and I remember asking one of my new friends "you mean you can juggle for a living" now 20 years later juggling, and magic is all I do.

Hi there,

Thanks for the post Al! As I have already discussed with you, I'm quite far away from a juggling club, and Im not old enough to get myself there, so for the minute that isn't an option.

However, as soon as I can drive, I will be there!!!

Many thanks

My soon to be wife started juggling a while ago and the only other jugglers shes been aroun is myself, a guy she saw at a fair and that's it. What we found worked for her was going onto youtube and looking up street jugglers and jugglers in general to see what kind of tricks she found interesting and looked like they would be worth learning to put in a show. Also a huge number of online tutorials are available on juggling.

I would say this. For performance things like body throws (under the leg, behind the back) go over great. If you have the ability to learn a 3 up spin or even a 1 up spin that can be built up into a great trick. Also 2 in one hand is a good thing for a show due to the gags that can be played from it. If you ever plan on doing a juggling show look into things like rola bolas or unis to embelish the act. A bola doesn't take long to learn and add much to a finaly trick.

If your not old enough to get yourself there I will assume you are 16 or under. I may be wrong. If you are around that age heres a piece of advice. DO THIS TILL YOUR LUNGS COLAPSE.

When your 22 getting ready to be done with school, assuming you go, the idea of juggling instead of getting a real job will be extreamly appealing. If you put 4-6 years under your belt of solid practice and working on a good set and the marketing behind it you will be in a good position in life.

If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

Hi there,

Thanks Anton for such brilliant and sound advice! I am setting myself up as a children's entertainer, but I won't be doing just juggling for a living. I would like to be fairly skilled in it though, really just for my own interest because I really love juggling!

Many thanks

Finding a local juggling is great for inspiration and motivation. I recommend that you don't diversify when it comes to juggling. A decent juggling routine can take about 6 months to learn (say 3 balls with 10 really nice tricks). If you change props all the time then you become the jack of all trades but master of none. Find a prop and stick to it. One really nice juggling routine with about 10 tricks and a finale is waaaaaay better than doing 5 different props with an average routine.

As you are doing this for fun, do what is fun. juggle odd props, work on numbers, juggle to music, and change the music often to keep it fresh. In school? start your own club! I have met some fine jugglers who never went to a club, they just found juggling fun and made up there own tricks.

don't fret about not having a local juggling club. It can be good to get inspiration. but for the most part, if you don't pass clubs, or play combat you can get by without.

juggle have fun. if you have a idea, try it. nothing is wrong.

And the rest!

A decent juggling routine will take several years to learn. A basic juggling routine will take 6 months to learn.

Caution: using Youtube for learning your juggling means that you are limited to the types of juggling that are put on Youtube. At the moment the juggling fraternity is obsessing about one or two styles of juggling but these styles change over the years. A convention or workshop is more likely to expose you to people who have learnt different styles or not adopted the latest trend.

If you are not interested in doing lots of pirouettes or siteswaps then wait a couple of years and the trend will be to do something else.

Nigel is absolutely right. I practiced 2 hours a day for 10 years in order to be good enough to perform the clumsy comedy juggler routines I do today, so at least as far as I'm concerned, I had to be really good in order to look really bad the same way every time.
