So who here rides, ( I do not mean can ride, I am reffering to people who use or have used tall unicycles in shows) a tall unicycle in their show but cannot free mount it or any tall uni? (this means if you use a 9 foot in your show but cant mount any tall uni even a 5 footer)
The reason I ask is I can mount my 6 foot maybe 3 out of 10 times. I have been working on it for quite some time. Somtimes I get it...somtimes I don't. I don't feel I iwll ever free mount in a show but I feel I should learn it for compitence sake. So I figured I would poll you guys to see who uses it in thier show but cannot freemount it. Let me know. Anton Also I will be upgrading to a 9 foot soon. Any sugestions or personal experince. I am looking at tall uni that breaks down into small pieces for travel. Any advice would rule. Anton,
When I was using a tall uni (Custom built Tom Miller giraffe with a quick breakdown) I was free mounting. As I have gotten older (and lazier) I realized that my show is just as entertaining without having to shlep a uni around and be concerned about the venues floor, etc. There are lots of acts out there that do the comedy mount by using a volunteer from the audience (could be a stooge/confederate) and climbing up them to mount the seat. It can be funny but the whole thing could 'go south' in seconds if you don't pick the 'right' helper. Why do you want a 9 footer? The audience doesn't care and the chance if getting hurt dismounting increases the higher you go. However, Tom Miller will build you anything you want and it's quality. Goto http://www.tux.org/~bagleyd/unicycle_factory/ for contact info. Tell him Cap'n Mike from Jest Jugglers sent you and he'll charge you an additional 20%. :O) Be Safe, Cap'n Mike ====================

I want the hight for out door shows and such. Ive ridden one that tall that was made for me and later folded. It was a slop job done cheap by a firend. It will have break downs so it could be 5-6-7-9 feet tall. I use two people to mount it. Always gets a laugh.
Another reason for the hight is because I do not do a lot of stunts in my show. Some people do everything but the kitchen sink. The juggle diablos, boxes, cups, stixs, clubs, balls, rings, spin plates, jump rope ect. I do a couple sideshow stunts, a magic trick, and for juggling I do a 3 ball routeen, a 5 ball trick, and then the tall uni. Because I do a series of simple direct tricks and not a huge colection of stuff. I like to do the things I do big. Its a quality over quantity thing. I would agree though that for an indoor show a 6 footer is fine. Frank Oliver is a great example. Anton |

I use to do an 8 footer but now use a 6 foot. The main reason is that I use volunteers to help me up and when I am ready, I let go of them and ride. On a 8 footer, you have to time the audience to let go for you to ride. If someone hesitates at that point it can be really dangerous.
The copies of the DM's are good for folding down. Here is the DM story incase you havent heard it : A big company use to buy DM's and sell them for him. Then they decided to get them made in Taiwan for cheap $$. DM closed in 6 months of this happening. Andy |
