Hello,
I'm thinking of purchasing some things from David Ginn's website. But he has so many videos, books, ... So which material do you all think is a must-read/must-see/must-use ? I already have creative kidtalk. Thanks, Gerto

The classic Professional Magic for Children has always been a good book.

"Children Laugh Louder" is the followup to "Professional Magic For Children" so it's not a bad idea to get both. "Children Laugh Louder" also comes with a lecture DVD talking about much of the material (it is old footage but good).

Well, it's not one of his videos or books, but I'm having some great fun with his middle-diddle silk gimmick. Although I'm not a performer, I've done this with the family and some neighborhood kids. The response is great, even from adults. It's definitely going into the local Easter egg hunt "show" we're hoping to do.
This one simple trick is well worth the $10 David charges.

I started a 25+-year career with routines from David Ginn's books. CHILDREN LAUGH LOUDER, KIDBIZ, 50 WAYS TO MAKE CHILDREN LAUGH, STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT ENTERTAINING CHILDREN - all wonderful!
He used to offer more stuff (maybe I just didn't find it) - a comedy linking rings, etc. plus some early Samuel Patrick Smith books, again all very useful. Abandon your uncertainty - in my opinion, it's pretty much "throw a dart and hit gold wherever it lands." |

Over time, I've ended up with just about all of his books. What can I say, I like his style. It resonates well with me.

Consider other performers Such as Ken Scott to give you a newer and fresh ideas and anothers performance style. There is also BJ Hickman's Magic Show, as well as shows for Daycare by Sammy Smith and Dave Risley.
Focusing only on one style limits your growth creative capabilities.

Was Kidbiz that book where Ginn and Sammy Smith and a vent discussed different aspects of performing for kids and then gave a round up at the end of each section?

Hi MagicSanta -
The book you are thinking of is Creative KidTalk (mentioned in the first post on this thread), co-written by David Ginn, Samuel Patrick Smith, and Steve Taylor. It was based on a series of articles they did at one time in M-U-M. Here's a link: http://www.spsmagic.com/products.asp?product_id=b029 They have also produced a couple of other items together (a DVD set, and a tape set). - Donald

I have Kidbiz and have gotten a lot out of it. It was published back in 1982 so you'll want to update some of the punchlines a bit, but it still has a lot of great material and ideas for routines.
Since the topic of daycares has been broached, the following link might be of interest to others seeking this specialized market: http://www.comicmagician.com/daycares_preschools_1.html |

Thanks everyone for the reactions.
@Dennis: I already have several books of others, but the reason I was asking for specific material from David Ginn is that in a few days I'm going to a lecture from him; and he'll be selling some materials afterwards. -Gerto

I like KIDBIZ because it is loaded with corney lines that still work today.

I would recommend Seriously Silly by David Kaye. This is a very comprehensive look at magic for children.

While I think Ginn is classic stuff, I would second Smartini's recommendation of David Kaye, who is the most psychologically sophisticated and studious kids show magician out there. While Ginn has perfected amazing routines over thousands of shows (amazing the show schedule he keeps, Silly Billy actually is making a science of understanding how kids think (and distinguishing effects that work, say, for the under sixs, the 7-9s and the "older kids" - if I remember his three age breakdowns correctly). Also Sammy Smith's stuff (and his website) are very informative. But don't overlook also other kid show performers like Bill Abbott (great DVD on childrens' shows) and storytelling genius Leslie Melville (Magictales is an amazing book).

I love Bert Easley's Doing Magic For Youngsters. Great stuff in that book. I love everything by David Ginn. Silly Billy's book is great as well. Get them all!

I think you should buy both Ginn's books and Silly Billy's (David Kaye.) Ginn's stuff is definitely from a different age, but also from a very different demographic than Kaye's. Kaye's book gives more insight into actually creating new routines, while it also gives some great routines outright. David Ginn's books gives a lot of tips, lines and routines, but doesn't really go into what makes his routines work as well as Kaye's book.
