I have spent a small fortune on 'difficult' card sleights, M5 PK effects, levitations. healed and sealed, only to find that my spectators show the best reaction to the $2.85 expanded shell set.
I bought a 'cheap' set off ebay. What 'cheap' effects have astounded your audience the most? |

A bill switch with a TT always gets a big reaction for me.

Oh, the junk in the boxes and books on the shelves. Thousands of effects and so many props. Sure it's good for some people, just not right for me. Most went unused.
For YEARS I carried a c/s, a bit of sponge, a cig-thru-quarter, a 21 cent coin and small tweezers with my coins. When a close-up pad was available, just two sponge balls and a TT was it. And for dinner gatherings my more formal stuff filled a small case. Just a close-up pad, a few props and some coins. If you want cheap, check out the Ramsay material. That guy used tissue paper, ice cream cups, beans and a few coins. He really played up the cheap. Oh, and for all the fancy sleight of hand, I used to do an over-the-head vanish for people (when just an audience of one) where my roomie caught the whatever. It's funny how that bit can work at the right time and REALLY amaze someone. My roomie at college really liked how people react to magic and so was very cool about not giggling at the wrong times. h

I tend to agree. We tend to buy a lot of things we'll never perform.

Not sure if we can say the word so I have PM'd you with the translation. It's a magicians abbreviation so people who over see or hear the word won't know what your talking about.

I think that we all go through a period of buying everything that we see. This is actually more useful than you might think. First of all it allows us to develop a sense of what is worth purchasing and what is not.
Secondly it gives us a plethora of interesting props and ideas that we have the potential to turn into effects of our own. Steve |

A TT is a D'Lite that has been de-lighted.
That should clear it up even for the laymen. (who have probably purchased more D'Lites than the magicians have)

Haha How true that is Curtis. People who don't have any interest in magic whatsoever will always have their d' lights.
Check out my new effect "As Good As It Gets" a gimmickles pencil or pen through bill effect. It closely mimmicks the slow motion phase of "Misled." About "As Good AS It Gets" for no gimmicks and everything being borrowed.

Curtis, how on earth were you lost to the magic industry? Advertising has lost one heck of a good copywriter methinks.

I've always said the best effects are the inexpensive ones. For instance, Professors Nitemare (a million dollar effect for about $3.00) Card Warp (unexplainable effect for about $3.00) TT effects (any, $3.00) I can go on, but you get my point.

It not necessarily the least expensive ones as it is the simplest ones.
I guess the 2 often go hand in hand but not always.

How much are two rubber bands? I get five to ten minutes great reactions out of them.
OK, I use nine rubber bands, it still doesn't come to much. That is - if I do not include the tapes and books I have got about rubber bands. And the money I have spent on magic meetings and conventions. nitram: did you not spend anything but 2.85 on the magic you perform with the expanded shell set? |

Nitram, is this the same set that locks, but rattles when the spectators shake it?

Yes unfortunately, but the effect is still powerful, because there are no secret moves or palms apart from placing each coin into a partly closed hand. I am going to add a little wax to try and stop it.

I go with Anders.
There is nothing that beats the effect-cost ratio than the rubber bands! It is THE trick everybody begs me for...and keep in mind I perform U3F, Explosion, and cups & balls with cristal ball final loads... I would not go so far to say it is my reputationmaker, but defenitely my most requested...snif.

For me, it's rubber bands and "Two in the hand, One in the pocket." Both are easy to perform, and both are totally impromptu.
I think the impromptu, and easy perform tricks are the ones that end up with the most polished presentation. Perhaps this is why they get more of a reaction? Ejnoy!!
Magic is fun!!!
