Hiya, Magi:
Here's a photo prop I've been using to up-sell my birthday party shows. Yeah, it's a little tough to schlep around, but it still beats contracting... Enjoy! http://outlawmagician.com/NEW%20KID%20SHOW%20FUN!.htm Leland |

Clever idea. Is it prompting clients to upgrade?

Thanks, guys.
Too soon to have much data, but I up-sold and booked two shows for this Sunday just on the description of the bit alone (before the photo was up). Altogether, I've got less than $75 and 1-1/2 days of work invested; I think the money and time will prove to have been well-spent. |

I am assuming you are not attempting to hide anything, which if so, in itself is kind of cool. The method is so simple that anyone seeing it used in such a context would likely dismiss it as "not a real method" for actually levitating someone (especially if they've seen the 360 degree camera shoots from Criss Angel's shows).
Now, it raises another question... What other illusions could be mocked up to be used for photo shots like this? Sawing in half, maybe? True methods can be hidden, because the illusions would be faked. The only thing that matters is how the photo looks. I'm impressed with the concept, Leland.

Thanks, Michael --
Good point about the "method". In use, I emphasise that this is a "CAMERA TRICK", and make NO attempt to hide the method, since "REAL MAGIC doesn't need camera tricks!" Your idea of mock ups for other illusions has got the wheels turning already. Right now, the seat on this device is detachable and may be swapped out for other props -- a broom for Halloween is one possibility, a sleigh for Christmas maybe, or perhaps just a rope for that elusive Hindu trick. But we'll see what other illusion-based photo props crop up. |

Straighten up your carpet. If a carpet could really "fly", it wouldn't look all floppy. Check the old "Thief of Baghdad" movie, or even Walt Disney's "Aladdin" cartoon.

Very clever, floppy carpet or not. Great hook for any kids show performer.
Well done, Mr. Outlaw! |

Curious... If a carpet could really fly, how do we know what it would look like? Hmmmm...

Okay, I've been hauling this around for a couple of weekends now, and parents really dig the thing. An under-impressed kid at last night's gig, however, looked at the set-up and said, "It's a CHAIR."
Anyway, I'm re-tooling to make the #$%! thing a little lighter to haul and create a slightly more...active-looking carpet. My concept of a carpet that could really fly would be one that gently undulates...sorta like a jellyfish's mantle...and even if not quite authentic (!), makes for a nice, dynamic photo. Leland |

Bummer if they build it up in the kid's mind that he will really float in the air. Now might be the time to think of another approach to interest the kid when he finds himself being dragged from anticipation to disillusionment. Since no secret is intended to be hidden, maybe the kid-friendly angle should be enlightenment to the methods of trick photography, movie magic, and how, if he keeps his yap shut, he can freak out his friends. ~michael

Man, Leland! You really jazzed up an oldie there. Really great imagination and workmanship. That will make for an excellent picture for the parents to treasure for life.

Leland,
Look at my avatar to the left here. I modified the carpet so that it looks and feels to the child like the real deal. I have never had a complaint although some kids in the audience do to try to look under. |
